Thinking about picking a propane lantern for fishing. Seen some pretty bright ones at the lake before. How much propane do they use? I noticed people have been using the 5 gallon propane tanks with them. Will the smaller sized propane tanks work well also?

For what use?

For camping, the white gas laterns are pretty tits.

Provide a lot of light while shore fishing over night, and possibly provide light to the shore to attract fish.

Not going to get that kinda light out of gas lanterns (at least not in the quantity that you'd need).  Sounds like what you need is some real estate...

I have the small Coleman lantern (about $15) and use the small propane tanks ($1.50 ea).

One tank lasted my three nights worth.  I didn't use it all night long, but maybe 2-3 hours each night.

They're lights. That's all I can say. I use a few myself. The good thing about them is you can refill the one pound or so bottles from larger propane tanks with the appropriate adapter, so you do't have to buy the little bottles often. They are probably ready right out of the box for the small propane bottles, you'll have to buy adapter and hose for using tanks. Coleman and others make tank adapters, I got my refill fitting at Harbor Freight.

I have a Coleman Northstar LP lantern and this thing puts out a LOT of light.
Only lasts ~5 hours on high, longer on low.

I have over ten lanterns, everything from the standard white gas Colemans, electric, to the kerosene Hurricane lamps and by far the Northstar Coleman is the brightest one I own.

A GOOD COLEMEN LANTERN FILLED AND LIT RIGHT BEFORE DARK WILL BURN ALL NIGHT LONG AND STILL BE LIT IN THE MORNING. I JUST LOVE COLEMAN STOVES AND LANTERNS. THE WHITE GAS ONES ARE THE BEST, HANDS DOWN. YOU CAN ALWAYS DRAIN THE LAWN MOWER IN A PINCH. THE ONES WITH PROPANE ARE CLEAN BUT DONT LAST AS LONG. ANOTHER THING GOOD ABOUT THEM IS THEY ARE PERFECT FOR POWER OUTAGES, FLOODS AND THE LIKE. IF THEY ARE THE WHITE GAS TYPES THEY SHOULD NOT BE USED INSIDE, I DONT KNOW ABOUT THE PROPANE ONES INSIDE.  308
