I love dogs and even created a thread about how people who HATE dogs cannot be trusted(doesn't mean if they like dogs, they are automatically trusted, nice try) but I laugh when people say if their dog has a bad feeling about someone(acting funny around a certain person or not known to bark but they come around a certain people and they bark), they take their dogs word for it and generally avoid a certain person. |
Our family dog Gretchen was GSD and Husky. She was scary smart. Sunday morning , she used to be waiting at the bottom of the stairs , ready for her 'run-run ride' to get the Sunday paper and muffins. She would be asleep any other morning. We couldnt say 'run-run' either around any of our dogs......they would go into hysterics until you took them ![]() When Gretchen was riding in my truck, we could go anywhere in town and she was fine......but get within a few blocks of the vet and she would start getting nervous (no matter qhich direction we approached it at...I tried several) ....get near the building and she would wimper and whine something terrible |

A serious tale (but true) - I was away from the house when my father-in-law died. I got home within a few minutes or so of him passing away (no one else was there). His dog was sitting on the front porch howling like he knew his buddy of many years was gone. Poor old Dusty was never the same after that and eventually left home (or maybe just went out into the woods and died) and we never found out what happened to him. But he knew Roger was gone, that was the only time I ever heard him howl. It was a mournful, lost sound. I went back out on the porch and tried to pet him and rub his neck to comfort him. He stopped howling for a minute and then moved to the other end of the porch (closer to the bedroom where my father-in-law was and began to howl again. As to "experts". I've read that dogs can't think and plan ahead and yet I've seen a dog hide behind a car or shed and wait on another dog that he knew was going to come running by in a few minutes. He watched the other dog playing with my brother, waited till it was out of sight, ran over behind the car, hunkered down and waited till the other dog came running by and then jumped out and pounced on the other dog. That's' observation, planning, sneaking and patience. |

An epileptic friend of mine had a dog that she insisted could tell when she had a siezure coming on and would stay close until it passed. Never saw it myself, but some experts say dogs don't have feelings too-anybody who has been nice to a dog and yelled at the same dog knows that's not true. Sure they have smaller brains and are a lower life form than humans, but they must be doing something right to have us "smart creatures" take them into our houses for unknown centuries. Dumb or not, there are a lot of things dogs can do that we can't--I know I wouldn't be able to find drugs or bombs hidden in secret compartments by smell. |
| I had a black lab that hated the cellar had carry him down there fighting all the way, then one day a tornado passed about 5 miles away it sounded like rumbling thunder but never stopped for 5 minutes. He was the first one in the cellar and the last one out never had trouble getting him there after that. |
| I think some of their intuition comes from their hearing and sense of smell, both are far beyond what we are capable of. I did see a show once where they'd show a camera on a dog and its owner leaving the office, the dog would perk up every day when its master left the office. Even if it was at a different time than usual. |
My last dog did that and I ignored it. It turned out that the few people he triggered on, who I thought were good friends, really weren't worthy of the title "friend"at all, to put it mildly. Next dog I have that does that I'll at least pay attention.... |

My mother died suddenly when I was 19. I was staying at my grandparents the night she died and when I found out my sister asked if I would go see her before the coroner took her away. I didnt. But sis said my dogs laid their heads across her lap and watched her until they took her away. Dogs are way cool. I hate not having a dog but I dont have the space or the time right now. |
I feed mine babies and kittens. Everyone knows that's all that Pit bulls eat. -Mark. |
This is one stereotype that I see very rarely disrupted. Many Women dont inherently know how to raise a dog or have problems doing so properly because it seems "Mean" too them. |
Gretchen was hilarious when a storm rolled in (this thread makes me think that she did know about them before we did) She would be in my parents bedroom hunkered down by their bed. (they had hdwd floors) A crack of thunder would roll through and we would all stop what we were doing to listen ....and sure enough ...you could hear Gretchen scramblin' and scratchin to squeeze under my parents bed!! ![]() Poor girl was petrified of thunder.....but it was funny as hell. Gawd I do miss her so |

I think my dog woke up once during the last thunder storm we had. He just looked up like he was thinkin' "knock that shit off!" and then went back to sleep. He slept right through the fireworks during our Independance day block party. Noise just doesn't seem to bother him. When he sleeps, he sleeps HARD. -Mark. |
A pup that his been with its mother for 12 weeks even better as they learn a lot of socialization and other skills from mom in those formative 4 extra weeks. |
I'm no breeder or a dog expert but I disagree. 8 weeks and they don't need their dog pack anymore, that 8-12 week period they would be MUCH better off learning the in's and out of your human pack. I took this approach and my dog was 100% housetrained by the 10th week. By week 12 she was sleeping on the floor next to my bed without a crate without any issues. By week 16 she had free roam of the house while we where gone at work/school and still to this day she's never once pee'd/pooped/ or destroyed ANYTHING in the house while we're gone. She had learned all she needed to learn from her dog pack by week 8, after that it's time to learn what the humans expect out of them. I even took her shooting .22lr at week 16 and she's cool with firearms and slept through 4th of July. |
Well, my dog is in the hallway right now. We have a tornado warning for our county right now and she knows it. She won't move. She is also quaking with fear from all this thunder. |
What happens when you have to go to work? It's cool to have your dog love you and all, but it's not too healthy to have a dog that can't leave your side. Go to an open field and give the "sit" then "stay" command and walk away from her, how far can you get until she disobeys your command? |
Where is the dog thread you were talking about in another post? I'd like to view that one, thx. |

well.............thats one opinion.
