Hey all, I'm looking for a home safe to put in my closet (the gun safe in the basement is a little full.)

I was thinking of just picking up a Sentry Safe at Lowes or Home Depot, will one of these do the trick?  It will be for papers, external hard drives, camera, camcorder, things like that...

Are Sentry's ok?  I know there is better but I want to stay in the 300.00 range for something that is 21w X 25tall X 16deep or so.

Thoughts?

I had a little one for almost 10 years before I got my gun safe.  Does it have the metal body?  I've heard the plastic bodied ones suck.  Mine was an old metal body one, and I loved it.  I gave it to my parents, as their sentry safe was full.  They've had theirs for over 30 years with no problems.  Amsec makes small fire and security safes, as does liberty and cannon.  They're more expensive, but may give you the security and fire protection you need.

Sams club used to have a small safe that looked like a large one in terms of the exterior, had great fire protection, and was a more solid and secure safe for $299 and I know I saw them last year but I don't know if they still have them. They were in the area that had business neon signs and money counters and the like usually located in the first aisle behind the cashiers in the middle.

Only good for fires.  They are easily broken into.

Wow, thanks, I didn't think this thread was going to get any hits.

I'll have to take a look at Sam's Club.  I didn't see anything at Costco when I was there recently but my look again tomorrow.

I have an Amsec biometric finger print safe in the closet bolted to the wall, made of all light duty steel...primarily there to keep prying hands away from the peace maker, but hopefully will deter the snatch and grabbers...

Thieves have been known to carry them out of the house and break into them at their leisure.

I keep my cameras/corders, important papers etc. in a Sentry fire/waterproof safe locked inside my fire rated gun safe for doubled protection in case of a fire.

If I were to get a separate one like your thinking about, I would hide it well, bolt it down, try to build some more fireproofing around it and not put anything worth stealing in it, papers, HDDs, etc., but not cash, jewelry, expensive electronics.

Reading a current thread on small lock boxes made me think about this one again plus my wife asked me if I wanted a safe for my upcoming birthday.

So,

Just wondering if anyone else has any other opinions on the Sentry safes sold at Lowes and Home Depot or something reasonable in price and somewhat local.  Not that you need to know where I live to know if someone carries them locally but a common place maybe like Lowes etc..

I don't know about your area, but right now at my local costco's, they're selling liberty small safes for $280.  The scratch and dents of the same model at the freaking factory are $800+

Worth checking out.

It's the smallest one of these.
