Never watched during the seasons but just rented all the season 1 videos and then downloaded season 2 ( $11 on amazon ).  In general I really liked it, but...

Throughout I was being critical of the story line and noticed what I thought were some tactical screwups -

1. Shotguns in gunfights up against rifles - too many of the locals brought shotguns to the gunfights.  Didn't they see the documentary on the 1997 North Hollywood bank robbery?  Shotguns < rifles at more than 15yds.

2. Bridge encounter with Ravenwood -
  - no snipers
  - no coordinated defense
  - could have used the sides of bridge for cover instead of being behind cars
  - didn't shoot Goetz as soon as he walked up
  - no flank offense to catch Ravenwood guys in side to side crossfire
  - finally, no 50BMG to stop the trucks or take out the drivers 500 yards out

Just a couple of things that stood out for me.

Critical analysis, tactical alternatives, and typical General Discussion BS welcome.

hawkins had a sniper rifle, he shot one of them ontop the truck in the bridge scene with ravenwood causing them to leave and go wreak havoc in new bern

the shotguns stuff tho, well, most of the towns residents are fudds, so what do you expect?

also, its a tv show. dont stew over it so much.

Tactics, we dont need no stinking tactics!

The writers consulted no arfcomers thus all survival aspects and gun fights were done incorrectly.

Right - Hawkins did take out their shooter.

Another question - is it impossible to aim and shoot 1 shot at a time in a gunfight?  Never been a soldier but have always thought you could take out more BGs shooting like at the range than spray and pray.   Any real soldiers who've been there please school me on how that works.

I think their imperfect tactics made the story line more believable.  Hawkins was the only one with tactical experience AND gear.  Everyone else had fudd stuff.  I don't personally know anyone with a 50cal BMG, yet.

That show went from awesome to leftist bullshit in the course of several episodes. I really hope someone picks it up and does a major turnaround.......but I hope for a lot of things.

i thought the way they portrayed it was more realistic than what you want.  the citizens of jericho are supposed to be kansas farmers, not delta force/navy seal/super ninjas.  their equipment is what i would expect kansas farmers to be armed with, duck shotguns and deer rifles.  as farmers i wouldn't expect them to be able to coordinate the kind of defense your talking about.

what?  no arfommers in Kansas?

good point though.   I hope all the people in Kansas and similar places have gotten the message to gear up and learn to fight.

But even so - I think I was about 13 when I learned the tactics that Ghengis Khan used to conquer most of Asia.  It was a pretty simple bait/retreat/crossfire setup, but it worked over and over again.  Do most people just miss out on this kind of stuff growing up?  I mean come on, if I was on that bridge I'd be looking at the sides thinking that the 4 inches of concrete would stop a lot more bullets than the thin sheet metal of an old car.  And I'd tell a couple of my buddies to head off into the grass to the sides  - even a couple of shots from different directions would confuse and distract the BGs.

Out here in AZ I could round up 10 people in a couple of hours with enough firepower and hands-on tactical skill to make that scene come out way different.

I think it'd be a safe bet that a good percentage -- 15% or more -- had SOME .mil training. Also, Jake was a 'technical' there, he should have planned that defense much, much better. You just don't have a bunch of people standing around where the BGs can see them and mow them down, especially if they are mercs with .mil training.

One observation about that show: if Jake had recieved that many blows to the head in real life, wouldn't he be at least partly damaged?

There was an ARFCOM'er on the bridge.  Watch very closely.

Unless someone was  astudent of military history growing up, how or why would they even be exposed to such training or even think sbout it? its not something your normal teen is going to think sbout.

You could have all the experiance, skill, and knowledge in the world and people could still listen to some moron instead of you. Then there is incidents like Picket charge, led by someone with a good deal of training and experiance, and still had know idea what the heck he was doing.

The battle at the end of season one had worse tactics and use of cover than the bridge incident.

Self preservation?

What if?

This guy managed to conquer most of the largest continent in the world.  Really?  How'd he do that?

Gettysburg changed the course of the Civil War and led to the defeat of the South.  Really?  What happened?  Why did Lee lose?

Curiosity?

Maybe because I grew up during the cold war, the possibility of it happening to me was more real.  When Red Dawn came out, it seemed all too possible.  I was in high school then.

So anyway, I got the impression that the people who wrote Jericho had never even thought about battle strategy.  If they did they had this 18th century idea where the armies pretty much faced off and started shooting at each other.

Agreed.  See previous paragraph.  The Jericho folks had tremendous advantage:

time to dig in
high ground on both sides of the road
plenty of cover
closer to home and a good supply line
defending their own homes
a leader who wasn't a criminal
moral high ground

They could have used Khan's bait - retreat - crossfire strategy easily.  By doing so they could have demoralized, confused, and frightened the enemy (even more than they already were ) into surrender.  Then they should have killed Constantino and his thugs on the spot and told the rest of the New Bern citizens to shape up or else.

Instead they waited until the whole army was right there and opened fire head on.

DUH.

If it hadn't been for Beck & Co, they would have been wiped out.

As I said, unless you grew up being a student of military history, you just didn't care about such things. I am 45, grew up during the Cold War myself, and none of my classmates had much of an interest in military history as I did. History as an entire subject was seemingly loathed by the student population then, and I don't think its gotten better.

the only arfcommer in that show was in the first or second episode. It was the town crazy that had all the radios and survival gear.

I think one of the ARFcommers was Jake's brother who said, in Season Two, "This isn't Red Dawn..."

I just saw that ep tonight and LOL!!!

the battle at season one was horrible

guy 1 : hey we got a tank Guy2: I know what we can do, crash it into a train!

also I loved the non sniper fudds yet they all had scoped up hunting rifles.

also one of the last episodes when they ambush the RW guys and jump up from cover to charge the RW guys who only had sidearms
