Title says it, what's you favorite vacation spot and why? I am looking at planning a between duty station trip for my wife and I and want to go somewhere we haven't been. Looking for somewhere interesting and different. Beach locations are not out of the question but a beach location needs something more than a beach because we have lived in Hawaii and Okinawa and been all through the med so getting to go to the beach isn't really that exciting. So what's your favorite spot? |
Actually, that's the 12 Hour. The 24 Hour is earlier and at Daytona. If I had to choose between the two, Sebring would always win. And it is an all day/all night party for about 3 days by the spectators but not for us, the corner workers. I missed the 12 Hour this year for the first time since 1985 due to complications from nasal surgery and I have worked corners every year except for a couple of years where I worked Pit Exit. |

Do you have kids that will come along? That makes a HUGE difference in some of the suggestions. - Las Vegas. Worth one trip if you've never been there. Not good for kids. - Grand Canyon. South Rim is better. Awesome. This is something you need to see with your own eyes, at least once. - Ayers Rock, Australia. It's in the middle of the outback. Sunrise and sunset amazing. - Niagra Falls. Very romantic. Go visit Canada while you're at it. - Orlando. Great if you have kids. - Rome. They like Americans there. All kinds of neat stuff to see, Rome was at its height almost 1700 years before the USA had its start. Make sure to visit the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's. If you get a chance also see Ostia Antica and Basilica San Paolo on the outskirts, each make a good day trip. - Great pyramids and sphynx, Giza, Egypt. - Climb Mt. Fuji (Japan). Not good for kids. Only open July and August to tourists. While in Japan you may want to visit the Peace Shrine at Hiroshima. Talk to the Japanese people about how they feel about the Americans and their nukes. Their attitude may surprise you. - London, England. Many, many places to see. Take a one day excursion and see the Stonehenge if you go. Also make sure you see the Crown Jewels. - Paris, France. A lot of Frenchmen (still) like Americans. Especially the ones that still remember Liberation, and their grandchildren. Go up the Eiffel Tower. Visit the Louvre. See Montmatre and Cite Island, - Munich, Germany. Go during Oktoberfest if you like beer. If you're military active duty make sure to take advantage of the AFRC sites at Garmisch and Berchtesgaden. Also go see the museum at Auschwitz. Not fun but very, very educational. Gosh, this could go on all day. There are ALL KINDS of interesting places to go on vacation... A lot of it is a function of what you want to get out of it, how much you want to spend, how long do you have, etc. For example, it's a lot easier to get to Australia and New Zealand from Okinawa, than it is from CONUS...

Aye....12 HRS...my mistake....but I knew Sebring was crazy......I havent heard Daytona getting all that crazy. Isnt it a regular carnival atmosphere at Sebring?? Ferris wheels and the whole nine yards? |
Yes sir, kinda like LeMans. Daytona has started having a Ferris wheel and stuff like that now. |

Myrtle Beach, SC. My favorite hotel there is "Captain's Quarters". It has a bowling alley/arcade/bar on the 6th floor, a restaraunt on the 9th floor, an indoor pool, an indoor Lazee river for adults & a smaller one for kids, 3 indoor hottubs, 2 outdoor pools & 2 out door hottubs. For every 1 day you stay there, you get 1 hour of free bowling. It's within walking distance of "Friendly's" which has excellant milkshakes. They even give you the metal thing with the extra milkshake. There is even a place where you can get your photo taken with a tiger cub & a small ape called a Gibbon for $40. You get to have up to 5 members of your family in the photo. I'll try to post the photo I got. For now, here's the links to those places. www.captainsquarters.com/ www.tigerfriends.com/ |
Thanks for the input |
Been considering that. I have been to Greece many times but my wife hasn't |
Yep. Dunns river falls = the only waterfall you can climb!!!! |
spent a week in London in March, missed the Crown Jewels but did go to Stonehenge, Bath and Winchester one day and Canterbury and Dover on another, both great trips, suggest you climb the dome at St Pauls, lunch at St Martins in the Field was good, (nice little cafe in the basement) Tate Britian was good, Victoria and Albert Museum was not as good, but nice, Harrod's is way overrated,, and the Beer is FANTASTIC, provided you like Cask Ales,,,, although all the pubs had the same basic menu,,,, the missus and I spent the better part of 4 days walking thru Westminster and Soho, and enjoyed every minute, wish we had more time to spend in Bath and Canterbury, ETA, see Spamalot in the original English,,, great play!!!!! |

Japan----------lots of history/things to see, friendliest people in the world, guaranteed to be different from anywhere else you've ever been, good food, great transportation system, no crime Argentina------------cheap, friendly people, best steaks you'll ever have----PERIOD, some of the best wine in the world, exceptional natural beauty, lots of big, empty spaces Chile-----------nice people, great seafood, some of the best wine in the world, spectacular scenery, lots to see and do, not crowded |
Nice pics, I was hiking in North Conway about two years ago. Went up Mt. Kearsarge (took about 2 hrs), spent 15 minutes looking around and then went back down. It sucks when you get to the trailhead late. ![]() I need vacation idears this summer too ... can't spend all my time here in Mos Eisley (aka Philadelphia). |
