I recently bought a new house with a basement and had a furnace guy over to do a check up.  One thing he recommended was to put a vent in the cold air return and that way I could siphon the cooler air from the basement to the rest of the house by using the fan instead of the a/c.  Does anyone know if this would work well? It seems logical, but before I cut a chunk of tin out of my cold air duct I'd like to get a 2nd opinion from all of the professionals here (what am I thinking!!!).  Here's a few photos:

Where I was thinking of putting the air vent

The air vent I planned on using

I suppose it would work, but I have never done it on any installs yet.

your vent would close anyways, Not much to lose if you do it yourself.

you might not circulate as much air in the rest of your house with it open though.  just remember that any air you push into a room, just as much air has to come out of it.

YMMV.

You would have to filter that. Otherwise you'll be sucking basement impurities in through the return duct.

I have been trying to figure out how to turn my furnace blower on and do something like this in my home.  It's generally 15 degrees cooler in my basement than in the rest of my house, and I refuse to put in central air.

the vent would be before the filter if he puts in the red circle

Well, I'll give it a try this weekend and see what happens.  Thanks for all the input

After a second look (paying attention this time) I stand corrected.,Also I wonder how that would effect the volume of air being returned from the upper floor/s.

Installing that 10 x 6 supply register in the return will not hurt the system, it may make some noise as it is a supply register and not a return grill. Give it a try.

If it doesn't work just buy some flat stock at Home Depot, remove the vent and repair the opening.

Let us know how it works out.
