there are laws in effect hat state commercials can not be louder then the programming, of course what they do is ensure that the entire commercial is as loud as the loudest moment in the program. Its a dick thing to do but the teevee people need to be paid too.

I remember a Magnavox TV feature about ten years ago called "SmartSound" that was supposed to automatically compensate for that.  What happend to that?

I have heard that there are places you can get the shows with the commercials edited out

One of my smaller TVs has that and it works great, especially for commercials, but the rest don't have it.

Spectre is absolutely correct.  You can be sitting there with the TV at a comfortable level, then you are suddenly blown out of your chair.

Some newer tv's supposedly have some sort of sound leveling deal so this type of thing doesn't occur. I'm skeptical until I hear it with my own ears.

A volume attenuator like those used in a recording studio can work between a tv and a home theater stereo, works well for poorly mastered movies as well.

The problem is this. People went to the FCC and they ruled that commercials could not go over a certain volume. Then they decided to drop the volume on tv programs and left the commercials at the same levels so they are perceived as louder because you turn your TV up more.

Another part of the problem is that most commercial audio is compressed differently so it just sounds louder. The signal is squished so the dynamic range is smaller.

The technology is pretty good, I'd say about 90%. It does a good job of recognizing the commercials by using the dead space between programming and commercials as a signal. Dolby actually created a volume leveler system that works like a limiter to avoid peaks and boosts lulls. They also have a dynamic acting EQ that flattens the bass and treble to a constant point so you don't notice peaks and valleys. The best way to put it is that the actually developed technology that "hears" the audio and adjusts it instead of just looking at waveforms.

Only WORSE with digital.  And especially those commercials BY THE FUCKING CABLE COMPANY.  These are clipping so bad it is distorting to where the audio is neraly impossible to understand.

I found this little button on the remote that solves the problem.  It is called the MUTE button.

Got a brand spankin' New 52" Sony Bravia last Febuary.
It's supposed to have the smart sound thingy/feature.

I programed the thing to "On", and the damn thing helps, but the Jackass Billy Mays still rattles the windows.

I'd say at best, the feature only cuts down the sound jump by 1/3.

Most newer TV's have a smart audio function.  It limits the decibel level of the commercial to the decibel level of the program you were watching.

I think that when you digitally record a show, the increased volume is the marker for the recorder to edit out the commercials. I may be wrong.
