About how long should it take to defrag?

Mine has been going since 2300 yesterday.  It just keeps going and going.  There isn't any percentage complete or anything.  It just seems to be taking way to long to do it.

Compaq something or other running Vista ()

Defrag restarts if the disk is used, I think.

I don't really know how else to determine if progress is being made.

Make sure you have nothing running that will access the drive or the defrag will just keep restarting. Large drives can take many hours.

Thanks guys.

Started it when I got off the computer last night at 2300 and let it go until around 0945 today.  I would have figured in almost 11 hours it would be done.

the only thing running now is my browser and that was still up from last night too.

Guess I'll cancel it for right now and try again tonight.

Thanks again.

Mine usually takes less than 1/2 hour and that is with a 160 GB hard drive. Something doesn't sound right.

I used to get a nsatygram that would tell me that defrag was starting because something had accessed the hardrive.  I never did figure out what was running that accessed the hard drive, I just had to deal with hit.

I haven't tried it yet with my new computer.

restart the computer in safe mode. then defrag. your problem is the computer is writing to the page file during the defrag, causing it to restart from the beginning ad nauseum. the computer doesn't do that in safe mode.

Search through your processes, and kill the ones that aren't needed.  Some run the the tray or the background, and you won't know they're there.

IIRC, the screen saver running in XP (or was it win 2k?)  counts as "a program running which will cause the defragger to restart".

How fragged was it when you started?

It didn't say.  It checked the HD and then asked if I wanted to defrag.  I didn't see a percent on how fraged it was or how far it was along in the defrag.

Did you do a scan disk and disk clean up first? As everyone else said shut all programs down. Mine takes maybe 15 minutes. When was the last time you did one? Sounds like your PC is very bogged down.

I did do a scan disk but not a clean up.  After the scan disk was complete, it just shut the window down, no details or anything, just closed the window leaving me wondering what was going on.

According to the defrag window the last time it was done was mid Feb (ouch)

this thing has come to a screeching halt compared to what it was when it was new (about a year ago).  I have 6MB cable service and sometimes its like dial up.  It gets very frustrating sometimes

Try a disk clean up it might help. I do a disk clean up every day at work.

Also make sure you've unchecked Surface Check or whatever it's called now. Checking for physical errors on the disc surface will take forever.

I have only defraged my drive on my new laptop once. I noticed that it didn't have the usual choices that my desktop computer (win98) had. I have vista ultimate now and I am wondering what ya'll are seeing that I am not (if you have vista). I didn't get a progress screen (where it tells you what percent is done) or a check surface for errors, or the legend where you can see a depiction of blocks of data moving. . I was also able to use the computer while it defragged.

I also no longer have scan disk.

My older computer got to where it would not defrag except in safe mode, then it got to where it did not defrag at all. I think my hard drive may have had a bad sector, the thing was almost 10 years old.

Am I missing something? About scandisk I mean, I don't see it and nothing comes up on search.

See Vista Defrag and/or Wiki: Disk Defrag as they may answer your questions.

Depends on how badly the disk is fragged, and how much free space you have.  If it's badly fragged and you have less than 10 or 15% free space it's going to crawl.

vista is set  to defrag automatically ONCE a month already.  DON"T DO IT MANUALLY

What if the computer is off when it's set to defrag? I don't leave my laptop on all the time.
