I am upgrading the 2005 kitchen, we put in entry level counter tops to get in when we built. The cabinets at maple and the counter tops on the main area and the large island are tile. I priced granite, FT! I priced Teak FT! I priced hard woods and found 8/4 Mahogany for $7.00 a square foot. For a small charge they router the bull nose for you and mill it however you like. I used this place for some Mahogany frames for some of my knives, nice stuff. Anyone else use hard woods for counter tops , any Pics? |

The problem with using wood for the counter tops is that they need to be re-sealed regularly, they can stain and if you cut on them and wear the surface dwon you need to sand the whole thing to get it even again. That said, I've seen some gorgeous butcher block counters before. Have you looked at (believe it or not) concrete counters? There's actually been a big increase in the use of concrete over the past few years. Durable and a lot cheaper than granite. I have no info or sources for you, but I've seen it in more than one house. |

Ugh, wood counter tops are so 1980's. You might be able to get away with a butcher block island, but that is about it. Check into some beveled edge laminate. It is fairly priced, and if you pick the right colors, it looks like granite. We do a lot of the beveled edge stuff lately. |
