I have a feeling that someone was trying to scam me.  They listed a free bulldog in TN on craigslist.  I responded to the ad asking questions.  Here is the reply.

What do you guys think?

she will ship from Cameroun and it will take about 8 hours for the baby to get to your location,As concern shipment we are going to use Air France to ship her from Cameroun to Paris and from Paris to US she will take a transit flight which will be Delta Airlines. This is because Delta airlines is working in collaboration with Air Franc. As concern shipment you are going to take care of the shipment fare while i will take care of her paper works. All what i will need from you to get her to you is her shipment fee the sum of $120.We are in Cameroun for a tour and we found out that the climatic condition doesn't favor her staying here, so we tough it wise to relocate her well she will be well spoil with enough love and care.As concern payment of the shipment fee you are going to send the money through Money Gram.If every thing being equal i shall shipped her tomorrow morning.I will equally need some information from you to prepare her for shipment to your location..below is an attachment of her pics
Hope to read from you again.

Paris to the US is a 10 or 12 hour flight  in itself. So yes, it is a scam.

As soon as she emailed me back and said if you are not close to me you will have to pay shipping I figured it was a scam.  That and not many people give away a free English Bulldog.  I reported it to craigslist and will let them check it out.

Sorry I changed my mind. The dog we just ate didn't taste as good as we thought it would. Thanks anyway.

Next time I respond it won't be so nice.  I told them that I was not interested and did not want to have a puppy shipped from a different country and that I hope they find it a good home.

Cons only work when you think you're getting something for nothing.

Bulldogs aren't free, or cheap. If they are, they're fucked up or it's a scam.

Duh.

I know that is why I responded to the ad.  I could not imagine a free bulldog.  First thing I asked is why are you getting rid of it?

Why would you want a dog from Cameroon sight unseen?
There has to be free dogs somewhere closer.
The grammar in the reply reminded me of some I've read here.

Because the ad was under TN craigslist.  They did not say it was coming from Cameroon until they were trying to get me to send money!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_fee_fraud

is a confidence trick in which the target is persuaded to advance relatively small sums of money in the hope of realizing a much larger gain.[1] Among the variations on this type of scam are the Nigerian Letter (419 fraud or Nigerian money offer[2])[3] and the Spanish Prisoner.

The 419 scam originated in the early 1980s as the oil-based economy of Nigeria declined. Several unemployed university students first used this scam as a means of manipulating business visitors interested in shady deals in the Nigerian oil sector before targeting businessmen in the west, and later the wider population. Scammers in the early-to-mid 1990s targeted companies, sending scam messages via letter[4], fax, or Telex.[5] The spread of email and easy access to email-harvesting software made the cost of sending scam letters through the Internet inexpensive. In the 2000s, the 419 scam has spurred imitations from other locations in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe.

The number "419" refers to the article of the Nigerian Criminal Code (part of Chapter 38: "Obtaining Property by false pretences; Cheating") dealing with fraud.[6] The American Dialect Society has traced the term "419 fraud" back to 1992.[7]

The advance-fee fraud is similar to a much older scam known as the Spanish Prisoner scam in which the trickster would tell the scam victim that a (fictitious) rich prisoner had promised to share (non-existent) treasure with the victim if the latter would send money to bribe the prison guards.

Insa Nolte, a lecturer of University of Birmingham's African Studies Department, stated that "The availability of e-mail helped to transform a local form of fraud into one of Nigeria's most important export industries." [9]

Embassies and other organizations warn visitors to various countries about 419. Countries in West Africa with warnings cited include Nigeria[10], Ghana[11][12], Benin[13], Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)[14], Togo[15][16], Senegal[17] and Burkina Faso.[18] Countries outside of West Africa with 419 warnings cited include South Africa[16][19], South Africa, Togolese Republic, Spain[19], and The Netherlands.[20]

Haha, actually I found some stuff one one of those sites where a lady with a similar name was giving her dog away for a shipping fee because it could not live in the African climate.  This lady was giving her dog away because it could not live in the French climate.

I love those african scammers, I hope they never get shut down, and these days anyone dumb enough to fall for their shit deserves it.

There is a site out there were a guy details how he sold a bunch of busted laptops packed in old CD roms to make the boxes heavier. The african scammer had to pay shipping. All the laptops had " Anus " scratched into the screens. Damn that is funny.

I get stuff like that all the time for craigslist posts and just delete them.  I don't even write back to say no or whatever because I suspect they flag my ads.  If you want to keep it local, try putting something such as "Item is available for local sale only".  That has cut down a little on the BS emails I receive.

"Butch" sent 9 DHL deliveries to the lads in Africa reverse charges.  The stuff he sent was hilarious.  Washer, dryer, almost sent an air conditioner.

It is a scam.  I have a client (older lady) who fell for that ad last year.  They bilked her out of thousands of dollars and she never got her dog.  First she paid the $120 for shipping (BS, airfare from Africa is way more than that), then they needed more money for the paperwork.  After that it was more money to pay off the people in "quarantine."  The issues kept coming a few weeks apart along with new pics of the cute dog to pull on the heartstrings.

Run Away Fast.

BTW:  You would think people living in Cameroon would know how to spell Cameroon.
