How long does it taking to receive a tax refund check? My laptop is about to start on fire and I need a new one ASAP.

Don't put it in your backpack and try to take it on a plane.  You can not take fire on the plane.

I heard they have up to 6 weeks, don't remember where I heard it.

Ok lets see, where do I want to start:

1. The volume works maybe 5% of the times I start the computer up and only lasts for about 2-3 mins before it crackles and then quits working.

2. The battery either died or there is something wrong with how the battery charges the computer. If I put the battery into the laptop it causes the computer to freeze until I remove the battery. The battery also will not give any power to the computer. If I put battery in and then remove power cord the laptop shuts off.

3. The power cord is very fragile. If i touch the power cord where it connects to the computer it will most likely shut off. I'm not sure if the connection is loose or worn out or what.

Well, my AZ state return showed up 2 weeks after I filed, my Fed return showed up four weeks after I filed - but I mailed them in early.

If you waited till the last minute before mailing in your returns you might be on the long end of a waiting list and who knows.....

BTW - there was a recall on those Sony laptop batteries that catch on fire....

volume rotary switch broken

power connector broken at the motherboard

...yes you need a new laptop or an Electrician to fix all this

I recommend The Lenovo X300 or Asus Eee PC 900

This is an Acer , much better than my $1300 DELL POS that I bought a few years ago that lasted 15 months before having the motherboard fry twice.

Oh, you have an HP/Compaq laptop?  Mine did that too (except for the volume thing).  I got tired of sending it back to HP, but they finally got it fixed.

ETA: Doh!  See now you have an Acer.

I sent my return in around February 10th or so and got the funds direct deposited around a month later.  They're slammed now with returns, I'd wager.  When did you send yours, and did you choose direct deposit?  If not, it will take even longer.

I was looking at those.  I might get one.

If I don't get that, I might get this:  Gateway linky

The one pictured is sold out- it is being replaced shortly with the P-172X which has a 7200 rpm drive.  I mention it because you may want to check it out.

I can't support Gateway after I got boned on their stock. And I'm not sure if I'd pay $900 for an Acer computer.

A T61 seems like the way to go w/ me, maybe a X61 but I'm not sure if there's a huge difference.

It depends on when you file, how you file and how you select to get your deposit.  If you file electronically and have direct deposit, it usually takes 2 - 3 weeks; about 3 - 4 weeks if you select to get your refund by check.
