If I were king, to save taxes on housing and maintaining prisons for lifers and convicted pedophiles I would banish them to an island off our coast. There would be a command post for an infirmery (I believe this is required) . The command post is fortified, has its own generator system and armed security force. There would be a security fence that has a gate to the rest of the island and an open area with cots for those prisoners who choose to stay. All others may depart into the "backyard" (the rest of island). Prisoners are told that by staying within the "wire" they will be afforded security and protection. All others are on their own. *No money for electricity for the prisoners *No gyms *No money to build buildings, cells, etc (other than the CP) *The prisoners can run free and throw sticks and stones at each other. *No chance of escape back into society. *If they ask for food they get an MRE (minus the spoon etc.). OK cops, lawyers, and corrections officers, tell me why we can't do this. |
Wasn't this called "exile" back in the day? |
Sounds like a good idea to me. But you would be "King"? You could be president if you want to. But "king" ? |
Which also sounds great until you ask if the current system is working? What's more humane, to lock them up for most of their lives or let them run around free on an island? What would be more cost effective? And then I ask again, is the current system working? |
Not as much 'why we can't'... It's just that executing lifers is much more productive... Also, it's a much 'softer' existance than an 8x10 cell for the duration of sentence... They would quickly develop their own civilization, begin manufacturing tools/weapons, and you'd have a new 3rd world country on your hands... Ruled by street gangs... |
how could they manufacture weapons, besides sticks, when there is nothing on the island to allow them to do so? |
