So I've got a shit pot full of knifes, all are good quality but for the life of me I can not restore a factory sharp edge.  Not to good with wet stones and the chef magic has not lived up to the hype, any inputs on a good solid sharpening system that even I can use would be greatly appreciated.

Lansky makes a good $50ish idiot proof system. clamp in holder, but rod in hole, move stone around like an epileptic.

The Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker 180% +2

I don't care how sharpen-stupid you are, this thing works miracles.  Anyone, and I mean anyone can put a hair shaving edge on a good blade in about five minutes.

It includes two levels of stone, I think one more may be available but not needed IMO.  It also gives you the option of a work edge, fine edge or better off a back beveled edge which gives you the best of both worlds.

I'm not shittin you, if you don't like it I'll pay for it.  And no, I have no affiliation with Spyderco, in fact I don't even own one.  Just extremely satisfied with the sharpener.

+1.

After many years of using oilstones, then futzing with a Lansky-type system, and experimenting with emery paper over a mouse pad, I finally got a Spyderco Sharpmaker.  I used to be able to get my knives sharp.  I can now get them HOLY SHIT sharp.

No matter how good the tool is, the person behind it can still screw things up.

I suggest this book: The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening

The cover of the book features the author, with a full beard, shaving with a DOUBLE-BITTED LOGGING AXE!! That's puttin' your face where your money is. I'd say he knows something about the subject.

Be ready to un-learn a LOT of what you've been taught in the past. I'm VERY serious: After reading this book and comprehending the contents, you'll be able to put a good edge on a rusty barn door hinge.

i use a piece of very fine sandpaper, one side of the blade then the other, and follow up with equal counts on a piece of leather or a smooth piece of cardboard.

on my swords machetes axes....electric grindstone with sandpaper finish

I just got a sharpmaker. Put the edge back on my g/f's never been sharpened kitchen knives in an evening. It's pretty idiot proof.

I use stones, myself.  I have years of experience with them and can get a fine edge.  It takes a bit longer, and is much more meditative.

That said, I usually recommend the Spyderco.  It works great.  I use that when I'm in a hurry.

Picked up one of these a while ago and have never looked back.  They're great for putting a scary-sharp edge on a blade.

I bought one of these too.  Freakin' awesome, and I'd never sharpened a knife before in my life.  I had it down in fifteen minutes after watching the how-to video.

That is all the info you need. Get the set with 5 stones. (ex coarse, coarse, med, fine, ex fine)
Anything that can make a better than factory edge on a benchmade is the bees knees.

With a thicker blade, I use the 30' angle and touch the edge up with the fine stone once a week.
