I am looking to buy a 1903 springfield and I was wanting you guys to school me on this rifle. Below is the rifle I am looking at and the asking price is 550.00. He says its an A3 but I thought all A3's had peep hole sights. Also What type of stock is on it? Is it a scant?

Thanks all

Scant stock, that's a 1903. $550 is a fair asking price granted the bore isn't shitty.

He says that he doesn't have any bore gauges anything else I can do at this point to check it out?

That rifle is a Frankengun.

It appears to be an A3 receiver with a 1903 barrel and rear sight. If you look closely you can see the remnants of the dovetail on the rear receiver bridge where the A3 sight would be mounted.

Check the serial number if it is a Springfield Armory. They changed the way that they heat treated the receivers after about serial number 800,000. Low numbered rifles are not considered to be safe to shoot and should only be purchased as a collectable.

Heck the sling alone could be worth 75-100 if in good solid shape and is nicely marked and dated.

Umm sorry but no it's not. I have had a few, they all have that little raised area in front of the bolt. I have one made in 1918 that looks like that.

What's the make on that rifle?  From the picture the wood looks nice, but the dealbreaker is the bore.  the last run of CMP 03's were drill rifles used by veteran's orgs, so there are a LOT of shitty black pitted bores out there.  I'd inspect the bore carefully.  If it's a good bore, than $550 is a pretty good price.  If the bore is junk, offer him $100-150 less.

To be honest his father died and he is selling all of his guns. He has a tresure chest of guns from lugers to rare 1911's but he has done some research on some of them and the price is up there for the rare ones. I was thinking this is a cmp one and he does have two garands

I have one from 1942 that looks exactly like that.  High serial number and it gets shot about once every 3 months. (Grandfather's drill weapon)
