Has anyone used this before? For what language? How effective was it? Thanks.

I got to try it out, in German, and I was impressed.

It was way overpriced and I passed on it however. If I had a genuine need to learn another language I'd pony up the dough.

If you are willing to pay the price it is pretty much the best out there.

I am trying to use it to learn Arabic right now and I used it a lot in school to learn Spanish.

Im doing the spanish right now, and it is good.  It doesnt have ANY english, you learn through visualasation and thought process.  Seems to work ok, I started 3 days ago, and seem to practice every time I see something I recocnize.

I used it for the first two units of Japanese. It was a great technique and I was able to retain what I learned better than via simple repetition.

However, like everything, if you stop using the language, you forget it quickly.

The excluded languages are
Farsi (Persian), Pashto, Swahili, and Tagalog.

It is best if used in conjunction with other means.

I've used it in the past, and I'd use it again if I have the need.

I've got the stuff for spanish and port. Its cool but for me theres no substitute for a real teacher to explain the shit.
My advice is to find a long-haired dictionary that can cook. I hear that works well.

I grabbed that one, too.  I'm so glad that your typical mouth-breathing luser never figured out NNTP.  It keeps all the media/enforcement attention on malware-loaded P2P crap.

I have it for Russian, I am definitely impressed with it. Doing at least a complete lesson a week is a good idea.

Not I said the fly. I'm too old and have too much self-respect for that con crap (I'm a self-hating fan).

But I can't honestly say that my faggoty little hobby didn't have anything to do with my interest in the language.

Well you're talking to a guy that plays board games, so we can both wallow in our respective hobbies of unusualness

A&A? Avalon Hill?

I'm trying to decide between purchasing French or Japanese. I used the French on the demo disk - it's amazing how much I retained. My pronunciation, however...

My girlfriend's going to Paris for a month next summer for an internship, so to pass the time and keep myself occupied and not get my head twisted over missing her so much, I was thinking of picking up this program to learn spanish while she was gone. It'd be a surprise for her since she's fluent and I don't know a lick of it save for the basic shit, and it'd keep me busy.

I've used the French and Arabic.  It is not as good as taking a class and being in a club.  Interaction and study is always the best short of immersion.

As far as the self learning goes, it is probably the best.

A&A is one I like. The only other Avalon Hill one I have is Nexus Ops. I generally have stayed away from dicefests but am starting to come back around to them. I just bought and played a game of Arkham Horror, which is a sweet game. You get to fight Cthulhu.

the one thing that pisses me off is that i spent hundreds of dollars on these programs (russian, arabic, and japanese) and all three of them use the same fucking pictures!!! i mean "see the boy run" shows a white, blonde headed american boy running...you'd think they would show something more relevant...

other than that, it's ok.

Gee, I don't know.  Duplicating copyrighted software would be illegal.  I wouldn't want to break the law....
