Edit:

I know that Roundup is the king shiznit of killing anything green.  I'm particularly interested in something that can be used on lawns without killing the grass.  I want to leave the non-combatants alive.

This is good for spot treating Broad Leaf weeds.

They also make a device that attaches to your hose that will let you spray you entire lawn.

This is great for Crabgrass and Broad Leaf Weeds.

I'd like to know too. I have a lot of weeds in my driveway, and I've tried some pretty potent stuff but the weeds just keeps coming back.

EDIT: would it be a bad idea to spray weed be gone on your lawn if you have an underground well? I'm guessing yes?

I'm new to it but ortho hose end sprayer has worked for me. Alittle of Ortho clover killer and alittle crab grass killer mixed in the bottle.

Spray the lawn and try to keep a health base of grass.

It's more important to keep heathy grass. That way the weeds don't grab hold.

It's all about feralizer, mowing often and tall, and enough water.

Depends where you are spraying it, and on what. I sprayed my whole yard with Roundup a couple of weeks ago. I have Bermuda grass and it was still dormant at the time so it didn't hurt anything but the weeds. Now my Bermuda  is just starting to green up.

You can buy concentrated round-up at most farm supply stores.

Not the "concentrate" Wal-Mart has.  The REAL concentrate.
(costs about $100 a gallon)

That will kill any weed it so much as touches.

But then so does diesel fuel.  On the farm, many years ago, dad would load up the
garden sprayer with some diesel and spray the weeds.  It worked just as good
as any weed killer.

Look for the Round up that has the Diquat mixed into it.  You get a quick burn-down

with the diquat and the round up still does it's thing.

Are we talking salting the earth or are we talking a pesky trophy lawn weed?

I know the perfect thing but it might be hard to get for you. Its called ERADICATOR and its a chemical used in car detail shops to degrease cars before they are repainted. Its ok to get it on you, i do all the time. its got a high alcohol content, but anyway. I bring it home and sparay on the weeds. fills it down to the bare ground and alls left is dirt. nothin ever grows there again, try and find a car dealership and ask the detail guys for 1/2 a gallon. thats all you will ever need

2,4-D is great for those pesky dandelions. If you have Bermuda try MSMA ofter the nighttime temps get to where they stay above about 65 at night. It will pretty much eliminate everything but the Bermuda.

I find that a double dose of Roundup, followed by a nice roto tilling with a couple hundred pounds of salt tends to render an area pretty much weed free.

Enough of the Roundup, Agent Orange stuff.

I'm interested in developing a lawn - not a scorched earth policy.

The 2,4D products work. Go to a local Co-Op, Horizon, or John Deere commercial dealer and get some Strike 3 Ultra 2 or Super Trimec. They work well on treating broadleaf weeds in turfs. They are selective herbicides if used according to directions. It depends on your state whether or not they are regulated (restricted) products or not. One or two applications is all it should take.

I'm a professional landscaper, BTW, company's name starts with Tru.....

"weed Killer"?

I ain't an eckspurt on lawns, but I do manage 30 some acres of Blueberrys, and have a restricted Chem Lisc.

Here's the gig.

Most weeds in a lawn are broad leaves.
Dandelions, chicory,sheepspurse.what have you.

The stuff you city folks need is called 2-4-D.

It's the main ingredient in Scotts "Weed and feed".

You get less than2% in "Weed and feed" and pay 30 bucks a bag for what is essentially 2 bucks worth of fertilizer with 50 cents worth of 2-4-D.

Little hint here.
go to the outskirts of town and find a tractor supply store.
Pick up a backpack sprayer and a gallon of Levelview 2000 46% 2-4-D.
It will cost you les than one bag of Scotts "Weed and feed".

Mix the 2-4-D in the sprayer at 2oz. to the gallon and spray the lawn.

It ain't horribly toxic compared to other herbicides.
You can let your horses or cattle graze a field sprayed with 2-4-D 24 hours after spraying.

Folks have been using the stuff since the late 50's, and if you have ever eaten corn, you have eaten the shit.

2-4-D will kill EVEREYTHING but grass.
That's right, Grass is immune to the stuff.

It will kill ornamentals, Bushes, and flowers so be carefull where ya spray the shit.

Hell....
2-4-D will kill trees if you aren't carefull.

If ya cut down a poplar tree, spray the stump so it dosn't come back from the dead.

I am restricted in use according to FDA Laws, and abide by those laws.

One of the best weapons I have for encroaching weeds outside of the Patch is 2-4-D.

Inside of the patch, the stuff would kill my berry bushes so I don't use it.

But DAMN!!!!!!!!!

I have a nice lawn

Roger that on the 2,4,D my Dad use to use it on his hay pasture, always had some of the best bermuda hay, and sold every bale. As a matter of fact I just sprayed my lawn with it today.

I see lots of people recommending 2,4-D products. And they work great.

However, you need to get the right one(s) so you don't smoke your, or your neighbors, desired broadleaf plants.

Generally, under 70F you can use low vol esters. Over 70F you should use amine formulations. The newer acid formulation - Hardball is one for T&O applications - can be used in a wide range of temperatures but even with that one you should not spray if temps reach 85.

You do need to be careful, those formulations that can volitilize will do so up to a few days after application if the weather gets unexpectedly hot.

Depending on where you live, it may be too late for pre-emergent treatments, but there are several firms here that make a killing using the Wal-Mart approach (low-markup, high-volume).

The lawns they treat always seem to look really nice without much work.

And by low-markup, I mean some charge as little as $25, some as much as $50.
