| John McCain, at 71 years old, dies, or is otherwise incapacitated prior to (or after, for that matter) the Republican National Convention. Who becomes the Republican nominee for president? Is there a line of succession for the nominee, as there would be for the death of a sitting president, or is it the person who received the second largest number of votes in the primaries? |

The Convention would nominate a candidate. Much like they did it back in the day. There would be ballots and more ballots until a concensus is reached. ETA: If he died after the convention I would assume the party heads would pick a new nominee since a convention would be impossible to pull off in time. This is the latest convention in history. In 1912 Vice President James S. Sherman died in office a week before the elections. He was replaced by the RNC leadership who chose Nicholas Butler as his replacement since he was viewed as being the second choice as the VP nom at the convention. If a VP died, the party would probably nominate the Pres Nominee's choice of a new VP candidate. But anything could happen because party politics isn't bound by the constituion. You could see a new convention or even the elections pushed back. |
