Company fired half of the company today, including my father - plant manager, and myself -engineer. Because they are "re-structuring" fucking bullshit. Fuck them. I am drunk  ETA: It makes no sense to me, they fired a lot of back-breaking individuals today. I used my own laptop for 8 months to design for them, because they could not afford a desktop system for me... |
| The same thing happened at the company I worked for back in November. They fired the production manager and my supervisor without warning, then laid off at least 40 people. They actually tricked my supervisor in to leaving his desk and escorted him out of the building. It's cheaper to move most of the production overseas. They just boxed up the machines and sent them to Taiwan. They then made it clear that they absolutely hated those that did my job (they kept moving us and our computers all over the production floor), so I quit. |

I don't think I'll have much of a problem finding a job in my industry - Plastic Injection Molding. Automotive and Recyclable dunnage. But its shitty when you bust ass and bend over backwards for people for 5 years, and they stab you in the back... Fuck them ETA: Polyflex Products Inc. |

| The horrible part about this - my boss had no say in it whatsoever. He said that they came to him and told him that they had hired a team to review EVERY employee individually and that because I do not have as much experience as other engineers/designers in the company they picked me. The head of engineering even refused it - he owns 35% of the company, but I guess the CEO said what they say goes. Therefore, me and a bunch of other people were out of a job.... |

This might sound like total B.S., but every time I have been canned it turned out for the best. If you need to finish your degree, do so as fast as you can. Having a Bachelor of Science in engineering will work out for you. Your family might want to move to a free state like Texas. There are lots of jobs here and the housing prices are low. There is no hint of a recession. I am from Texas, and I will tell you that not everything is sun shine and roses here, but if you are willing to make a go of it here, things are not bad. The state will not support you; if you don't want to work, the State of Texas does not care if you eat. The only welfare we have is for childern, really disabled, and women who are caring for small childern. With that said, we have some of the fasting growing cities in the country. Sorry to hear it....I am a Michigander and I know what its like, my wifes architecture firm downsized from 9 people to 3 in August, took her 2 months to find a new job, making about 5k less a year. I've been looking for some late night shifts doing anything for about 3 months now and haven't even had a call back from anywhere. The economy is shit here, which is why I'm only going to be a Michigander for about 3 more months. As soon as shool's out, my wife and I are packing up the kiddo and relocating. Do whatever you need to do to finish up school and get the hell out of this God-forsaken state, it's going to be many, many years before the economy here gets "better". |
Judging by the quality of service I got with them, it's deserved. |

FWIW my wife (a bankruptcy consultant for one of the defunkt automotive suppliers) knows that people are getting in at Dura, IAC and a couple of other organizations. If you need some names to drop, let me know, I'll have her get you some names.
