Okay, I want to make a portable moving target set-up to use at the range. Since there is no power available, I want to stay away from electric motors. So, I thought, "Hey, why no use the power of a spring loaded device, like those retractable dog leashes!"
The idea is, a wire with a cardboard target hanging on the wire (eyehooks) and then a spring to retract the line and move the targets (sliding along the wire). I could gear something down to reduce speed, but I need something that will pull back say 20' of line with at least a couple of pounds of force.
Well, the leashes do not have enough power to pull a cardboard target. So I thought maybe those clothesline devices, but I suspect that in this day and age, the cannot retract with any authority or there would be a law suit. Any know of something that (even a suitable spring I could hook to a dowel) that would have enough pull? Of course, I don't need horsepower, just a couple of pounds.

I couldn't think of anything that would work good for a solo shooter needing a "quick-release" type actuation... so here's a free bump.

Have you thought of towing a line with an RC car? j/k

If I were you I would consider something you could run off a smallish 12v battery like a u1 or m40... they're not too heavy.

Yeah, that was exactly what I thought of (an RC car for a motor). But, I wanted to keep it really simple.
I know the retractable clothes lines that they had when I was a kid would take a finger off if it got in the way, but today?
