The classic "Rules" I was taught (and I've heard the same basic 5 from quite a few older surgeons) are as follows:

Take out the Bad
Leave the Good
Stop the Bleeding
Drain the Pus
Don't F*ck w/ the Pancreas

I worked w/ a chief resident a few years ago who added a bunch more:

eat/sleep/drink/piss/fuck - when you can
always see the patient
learn from your mistakes
shit rolls downhill
if you're not operating, you should be rounding
always look at the films yourself
ABCs before H&P
don't argue w/ idiots - bump it up the ladder
don't piss off the nurses


He had bunch more, but those are the ones I can quickly recall- a lot was borrowed from other sources, but it was good just the same.
