What does this say?

Just decided to throw this at you guys and see if any of you could give me a clue. I have posted it on other forums in the past and never got a good answer.

Well? Anyone here know?

Not sure if it's right side up or not, lol.

MADE IN CHINA

Well it was worth a try, lol. I picked this up in Bahrain years ago while I was stationed in Kuwait at camp Doha 1998-99. I got a four day pass and me and some friends flew out to get some drinks and blow off some steam. I figured what the hell, I might as well bring something back as a souvenir. I've just always been curious what that said on the bottom of it.

Here are some more pictures of it.

The closest I can get (and I am in no way an expert and probably am dead wrong) is 豐成, which a google translation renders as "Feng Cheng," so I guess it's a name? Probably the name of the artist?

WOW nice antique

That object in the picture was made between 1851-1861, during the Xian Dynasty, which is represented by those two characters.  That script is very old-traditional writing.

Xian Feng

And that is free of charge!

ETA:   In the pic, you have it displayed correctly, HOWEVER, it's read from right to left

I am also Chinese, so if you need some characters translated on an antique, just let me know.

Yeah, my guess was that it was a signature but I just had no clue of course. I pretty much just wanted to make sure that it didn't say something like death by torture curse to anyone who owns this, lol.

My advice is to get that appraised and insured.  What you have is a piece of treasure in your hands.

You are a very lucky man.  If you find out, let me know.  I'm curious (if it's not a knockoff) how much that is worth.

VERY NICE FIND!

I really wouldn't know where to take it, I wouldn't trust anyone to give me an honest appraisal. They would probably offer me about 10 bucks for it around these parts, lol.

You know about the Antique Road Show?  If you find something similiar to that, or a reputable antique appraiser (that specializes in Chinese Antiques), that should be good enough.  Just take the picture to them first if you feel the trust issue is a problem.  Tell them about your story on where you've bought it.

What's secretOT.com? I saw in on your screenshot and couldn't resist visiting it.

I'll ask my girlfriend what it says, she reads Katakana fairly well, I don't know if it will translate though.. it's worth a shot.

My Advice... Stop finger fucking it...  Get it appraised immediatly...  If you break something, it will be worth a lot less.

Aw man, it's a long story. If you want in, go to the request access forums and we have some pretty tough rules about getting in. It's basically a very tight group of really good people that got sick of an old forum that we all used to frequent and ended up getting our own thing going. It's pretty much my home base, and pretty much where I found out about ARFCOM. Most of us own a large collection of guns, and well, some are even here. We have members from all around the world.

Sorry, realized I wasn't clear...

This is the correct way of reading it.  To the Western culture, it would read as "Feng Xian"...   however, in Chinese culture, it's read from right to left, so it's "Xian Feng."

Normally, Chinese characters are read from Top to bottom, right to left.  In some cases, just right to left.

This day in age, the language has become more Western, and a few select newspapers will print from left to right...
