7.62*39 is a tapered cartridge. It would be impossible not to have a curved magazine.

I have a dozen Colt straight 20s. When I found them in a trunk in the garage I had an excuse to buy my first AR. I'm guessing 30 rounds in a straight mag didn't jive.

The brass is slightly tapered (more so on the 7.62x39).
