While window shopping at Academy, looking at new Bushmasters, I met a young soldier just back from Iraq.  He said it is funny how once he came back he is not old enough to keep his sidearm and has to turn it in.  He asked the salesman, "you have to be 18 to buy the AR-15 right?"  The salesman confirmed yes 18 but the stores policy for this type of firearm is 21 and you can not buy it.

What a bunch of bullhis
Just thought you might like to know what a sorry policy they have.

Money talks, call and speak to the owner or manager explain your problem then show him your serious by making a firearm purchase someplace else. Then mail the owner the receipt for said purchase.

Its a private biz he can do what he wants, I dont have a problem with it myself.

I saw that crap last year.
Asked them about it and they tyried to give me some crap about a new law. lol
Then a manager said it was just store policy. So I put down all my lures and left.
They can run their business like that I can choose to not shop there.

It's their business they can set their own policies. Don't like it, shop somewhere else.

Agree.

It's bullshit, but they are free to set whatever bullshit they desire, just as I am free not to spend any money there.

He didnt say they couldnt make the policy. But I find it very distasteful that they would deny one of our warriors a firearms he is legally allowed to own.

I appreciate the guy's service too, but that should not entitle him to special treatment.  Same rules for everyone...

I bought 500 rounds of 9mm there the week after Christmas. They would not let me go to the register with the ammo. Clerk took the ammo up to the front to the register. I quickly asked WTF? Said that it was because of shoplifters. I call BS.

Stores are terrified of ANY liability.

The big box stores are run by an army of attorneys.

I like Academy, particularly their cooking and cooler sections, and am most dismayed to hear of this policy.  MOST dismayed.

Cheaper at a gun show?  Bahahaha!!! Not around here brother!  Last April I went to the local gunshow here looking to buy my first AR.  The cheapest I found was $1000 for just a plain jane flat top Bushy.  I went to Academy Sports and bought an A2 Bushy for $930 OTD.  I went back a few months later (July, IIRC) and learned of their new 21+ policy on the AR15s.  I havent purchased anything from them since then.

I keep my time spent at Academy to a bare minimum.  Some comments from their gunbar employees (here in Dallas at least) would make most Arfcommers' heads explode.

"That machine gun there is horribly inaccurate"

May need to "Dixie Chick" 'em. For every ridiculous action, there should be an opposite and even more severe REaction... Anyone know if it's corporate policy, or just this store manager's brainchild? Also, which store was this?

Here's a link to contact them.

I know the Arlington store does it.

It wouldn't have been a "straw purchase" for you to buy it from the store and sell it to the "kid".

I've had them carry ammo to the front before and other times they just throw me a case of ammo.

I always buy 2-3 cases at a time, I have always just had em hand it to me.

I hope you pointed this young soldier toward AR15.com.

People here will help him find somebody who will sell him an AR legally and gratefully.

If they are going to carry it to the front register, I make them stick around and carry it all the way to my car.

I don't see this soldier asking for any special treatment here, I see a company making their own rules to restrict a legal buyer from purchasing a firearm.  What if you've got blue eyes and they decide not to sell to you based on that?  You're right, same rules for everyone, and they've already been made and this changes them.

I do a lot of business with Academy, so do a lot of my buds.  A phone call tomorrow will determine if that continues or I take my business elsewhere.

I hate to hear this. I go to academy since I have grown to dislike bass pro so much here. Academy's prices are good enough not to drive the extra distance to the other. I had heard that a young lady wanted to buy some ammo for her bfs SKS at Bass Pro and they gave her the 3rd degree about it. Saying it was for an assualt rifle. Who knows if its true but I guess thats what you get buying from box retail stores.
