there are various products available like sound blocking foam, acoustic ceiling tiles, under carpet pads, etc... if you are trying to sound proof a large space it will not be cheap.

a quick Google search should give you lots of ideas

Yep.

Best bet will be acoustic foam, its not messy, won't be irreversible/permanent, check at:
www.partsexpress.com and
www.markertek.com

They do have blankets, cheaper, if you wouldn't mind the look.

This is hard to do after the fact.  I would suggest that you put Homasote board on the walls and "float" the floor on the same stuff, but that's not cheap.

If you want to build sound panels look at the thread I just started about my home theater & bar.  I built (8) 2x4x4 acoustic sound pannels to absorb and deaden sound for my theater...they work AWSOME!

QuietRock sound damping drywall is the way to go. STC rating could be cut in half with this drywall.

Sound is basically vibration. Vibration creates heat. QuietRock has a elastomeric gel in between to pieces of gypsum. The gel absorbs the vibration. That is the abrreviated version but it is the best solution for lowering a STC rating.

Cost may be an issue but it very effective and you wont be wasting money on inferior wall systems.
