Is there anyway to trace someones IP address to their home/state?

Yes and no.

Depends.

On the provider, on the person, on whether they're using an intermediate hop (such as proxy or a tunnel) before contacting you...

For most people, yes.  The tech savvy can throw you for a loop if they are expecting that somebody might be tracing them.

You could obfuscate it by using a proxy or a tunnel to another location.  You can't practically hide it otherwise -- that would be like sending a letter with a false return address and expecting to get a reply.

Not with 100% certainty. Shoot, not with 80% certainty.

Through an anonymous proxy

You can't really. You can ignore a ping request....but you can't 'hide' your IP. I mean, you could use a proxy....but....well

It's just how the internet works. It's a big network of computers and anytime you visit a website your IP can be recorded by that website. So....why do you want to hide your IP anyway?

It wouldn't take a great deal of computer literacy to use an anonymous proxy that somebody else has configured.  It would take a hell of a lot of trust and risk to expect that doing so would make you truly anonymous when it comes to anything of real import.

Well see, proxies aren't exactly easy for non-tech people.... and the ones you would use probably aren't even that secure as it is - they'd probably just be used by people trying to get around an IP blocker (like what RapidShare uses).

Well, it's kind of a strange thing to do which is why I ask.

Usually people use proxies because they're doing something illegal and don't want to get caught - whether that be downloading stuff or visiting websites which aren't 'approved' (a lot of Chinese hackers use proxies to get back the PRC's web censoring).

There are also computer people who use them for security purposes...but I take it you're not exactly a computer person.

There is a program I played with once that was used in the movie War Games.  I don't recall the name of it and have been told it's not 100% accurate.   It had great graphics and was a free dl.   I traced a ping from a block over from me.   Anyone recall this program?

It thinks I'm in Chicago (I'm in NW Ohio).

Unless your provider is using accurate LOC records in DNS, it's a guess.

Easily done (depending on your provider).  I can walk you through it, email me when you have a chance and we can do it by phone.

You can look like you are coming from China if you like, or certain email services don't supply the IP in the message header.

Other, more complicated ways as well.

Just don't do anything illegal, make threats or junk like that.

I have done it as an experiment and it works very well.

Hacking is an interest of mine, but not a game for high stakes.

A good tracker will usually find you within a large area of where you live. Nothing precise besides what the Feds use.

Using a proxy won't do shit if you're planning on doing something illegal, because it can still be traced to you through the right people.

That's not true, either. They don't know any more than I do. Law enforcement has one tool at their disposal that I don't, and it's the ability to either subpoena records, or simply have a significantly better chance of getting cooperation from the ISP.

Really, using a proxy on the internet is like James Bond swapping out his license plates on his car.

Unless you're trying to avoid getting caught by the police, it's kind of a strange thing to do. Also, most proxys slow down your internet speed since the traffic is being rerouted to someplace like China.

Believe me, I can beat it and unless you are way out, even the Feds won't jump through all the hoops.  Besides server records are kept for 30 days mostly.

Quick and easy way - go WiFi at Starbucks, et al and send from there.

Ya think Iran or Kim Jong will pony up server records? By the time they break the diplomatic and language barrier, the records will gone.

I'm telling you, it's easy.

Anyone wanna test my theory?

Most of them are dynamic anyway - just get your ISP to change yours.

Or...are you talking about your MAC address? You can't really change that one (although most routers can spoof them).

I'm calling serious, serious bullshit on this one.

I know exactly who Younis Tsouli is, who his mates are and why he's currently serving 16 years in a British prison. Better than that I know exactly how he did what he did and not a single piece of it is beyond my technical capability.

Feel free to IM or email me proof of your claim, I'd love to see it.

In regards to your question on privacy you can use tor to mask your IP but someone can't find you home with it anyway. Your ISP has a block of IP's which they give to customers via DHCP, depending on the customer density in your area this netblock may cover many, many square miles.

If your afraid someone has your IP just reboot your router, it will assume a new IP from your ISP (which typically changes every 7-21 days anyway).

Not trying to break your balls here but if you've got proof of your claims I'd love to see it.

In the meantime here Younis after a good beat down.

MAC addresses don't traverse broadcast domains, so it's not visible past his own network. Even then, who cares? At best, they'll know who manufactured his NIC.

Setting up a proxy varies from extremely easy to a mild annoyance. It just depends on what software you have. If you use firefox, there are a ton of proxy add ons for it, I think I have three or four on mine right now...plus a couple of other standalone programs

IIRC, it took me about an hour on google to get the basics and find some extremely good advice.

FWIW, most proxies are agonizingly slow. They're also not secure. I've had remote desktop requests pop up a couple of times, and I rarely use a proxy.

As a reminder, it's generally not legal to use a proxy anyway.

Firefox and TOR (http://www.torproject.org/)

or there are many pay proxy services e,g, anonymizer.com

Any proxy server is only going to delay the trace back to you unless the proxy server doesn't keep logs or only keeps them for a very short amount of time.

If you just want a different IP address try shutting your modem down for a few hours and then plugging it back in and you'll probably get assigned a new one.
