What do you guys think?

Q: How will your gun stance play among Southern voters?

EDWARDS: I grew up in the rural South. Everyone around me hunted, everyone had guns. I respect and believe in people's Second Amendment rights. That does not, however, mean that somebody needs an AK-47 to hunt. It does not mean that somebody who's been convicted of a violent crime should be able to walk out of prison, walk across the street and buy a gun. It does not mean that we shouldn't take every step that we can take to keep guns safe and keep guns out of the hands of kids. So, my belief is, first, I defend people's Second Amendment rights, but I don't think it's without limit.

I got this quote from a friend so I'm not sure where it was posted. But it SEEMS that he is actually a pretty good looking *EDIT* democratic candidate but wtf do I know.

Hey Don't laugh at me now this is my first time voting and I want to make sure I vote for the guy that I think will make the biggest difference and right now there aren't many people on the republican side to vote for. I mean Huckabee is almost bankrupt and Ron Paul just seems alittle to crazy.

You've heard the term "Ambulance chasing lawyer" right? When you look it up in the dictionary you'll find a picture of John Edwards. Seriously, I think even Hillary might have stronger morals than what that girly opportunist has.

I completely understand. Things aren't looking good for us and it might be inevitable that a democrat will get the White house.

I just never thought I would ever see someone on Arfcom say anything positive about John Edwards. The guy pisses me off every time he speaks.

DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES DEBATE, GOFFSTOWN, NEW HAMPSHIRE
JANUARY 22, 2004

HUME: John, you're next.

DISTASO: Senator Edwards, checking the Internet, the pro-gun ownership group, such as the North Carolina Rifle and Pistol Association, don't have glowy words about you. That might be a popular position here in a Democratic primary, but you also want to carry the South if you were to get into a general election.

So, could you specify for us, please, exactly what additional federal gun control measures you will propose as president?

EDWARDS: What I believe is that -- and by the way, I would point out to you at the outset of this question: Remember, I didn't get to the Senate by accident. I actually defeated an incumbent Republican senator who was part of the Jesse Helm's political machine in North Carolina, the result of which is I'm now the senior senator from North Carolina instead of Jesse Helms, which is a very good thing for this country. And that didn't happen by accident.
(APPLAUSE)

I grew up in the rural South. I know deep inside what people care about. From the time I was growing up, everyone around me hunted, everyone had guns.

I think there are limits on those rights, and particularly when the concerns and rights and interests of the American people are at stake.

DISTASO: Well, I'd ask you to keep going and tell us what federal gun control measures you would propose, in addition to what's on the...

EDWARDS: You mean in addition to what we have?

DISTASO: Yes, if any.

EDWARDS: I think we should extend the Brady Bill. I think the Brady Bill is, around now, set to expire. I think it should be extended.

I think that we need to close forever the gun-show loophole so that we don't have problems that I just described, of people who've been convicted of violent crimes walking out of prison, being able to walk across the street and buy a gun.

I think it does make sense to have trigger locks for the purpose of keeping guns safe so that we don't have 6-year-old children accidentally killing other 6-year-old children.

So I think there are reasonable things we can do. But I start from the place that we have to begin -- we have to protect people's Second Amendment rights. I have lived with this my entire life. And as I said earlier, I believe I understand what people are concerned about.

The Democratic Debate in Las Vegas

EDWARDS: I think that’s fair, but I haven’t changed my position on this. I’m against it. Having grown up where I did in the rural South, everyone around me had guns, everyone hunted. And I think it is enormously important to protect people’s Second Amendment rights.

I don’t believe that means you need an AK-47 to hunt. And I think the assault weapons ban, which Hillary spoke about just a minute ago, as president of the United States I’ll do everything in my power to reinstate it. But I do think we need a president who understands the sportsmen, hunters who use their guns for lawful purposes have a right to have their Second Amendment rights looked after.

Well see my friend who likes him was telling me he was a good guy etc.. and I believed him and I didn't know a lot about him (he told me a bunch of stuff like 10mins before I made this topic) So I was Ill-informed about a lot of things that he has said/done. So I was unclear about a lot of things and I'm glad I made this topic now because I am def. not going to vote for him now.

EDWARDS: I think we should extend the Brady Bill. I think the Brady Bill is, around now, set to expire. I think it should be extended.

Translation - I'll speak on issues that I have no real knowledge of, and be viewed as an expert. After all, the gave AlGore a Nobel...

I think that we need to close forever the gun-show loophole so that we don't have problems that I just described, of people who've been convicted of violent crimes walking out of prison, being able to walk across the street and buy a gun.

Translation - We want to track all sales of guns, whether at shows or not, and by FFL's or private parties. The use of the "GSL" language is as much of an intentional misnomer as calling semi-automatics "Assault" anything

I think it does make sense to have trigger locks for the purpose of keeping guns safe so that we don't have 6-year-old children accidentally killing other 6-year-old children.

Translation - Instead of having parents be responsible for their own brood and house, we want to guarantee participation of the Nanny State in everybody's lives. In addition, we want to ensure that the criminal element of our voting block has enough time to enter your house with your firearms in an unusable state as to ensure their continued participation in the Democratic process.

So I think there are reasonable things we can do.

"Reasonable" is not further restrictions placed on law abiding citizens by people who are afraid of inanimate objects. Calling such foolishness "reasonable" is like saying three wolves and a sheep voting on dinner is "fair and impartial".

Of course, we're dealing with man who made his living fortune off of well publicized contingency fee cases rather than a simple "real estate and wills" type practice.

But I start from the place that we have to begin -- we have to protect people's Second Amendment rights.

As defined by folks who think guns go off by themselves, or that the mere presence of a firearm will turn a nun into a serial murderer.

I have lived with this my entire life.

Or at least as long as my "life" has been defined as my running for public office.

And as I said earlier, I believe I understand what people are concerned about.

I understand that my radical lib base thinks guns are evil, and I'll be happy to offer platitudes to get the myopic EBR hating Fudds who support the  "American Hunters and Shooter's Association" to vote for me before I go after their 30-06 "sniper rifles" too.
