So I'm a member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets and I got a shot at going to Air Assault School this summer; should I take it and can anyone offer some advice about the course?

Do it. I had a line for the school in Germany. I received orders and my slot was pulled.

Take any and every school you have the chance to.

Drop.  You're a cadet and you were offered a shot at the Bullwinkle badge.  Of course you should take it.

Why wouldn't you?  Much more useful than Airborne I would imagine.

Let me guess, you are not at the top of your class?

Yes, and may I repeat an oft mentioned old joke:

"Know what holds up a chicken's ass?"

"TWO LEGS!!!"

Sure, go get your whop-whop, "Aerosol-Death from a spray-can" wings.

Then next year go get some REAL wings!

AIRBORNE!!! HOOAAHH!!!

Thanks for making a guy feel old.

And in the best ARFcom tradition, I got both.

PT, road marches, layouts, rappelling, road marches, PT, slingload, PT, roadmarches, rappelling, slingload, and maybe some more road marches.

its a good school-like everyone else said never pass up a chance to go to a school.

Hell yeah! Other than two zero weeks Air Assault school was a blast, of course I suffer from selective memory so YMMV.

Loved it.  Definitely go if you can.  I went through at Ft. Campbell February of 93.  Nothing like rappelling of the tower covered in snow and ice.

It was a great time and the 12 mile road march at the end is nothing.

Go

Where are you going to go to take the course?

Advice:

Get a new belt buckle for the first day

Don't be late

Have everything on the packing list, including the 3X5 card (bring spares of it, had a buddy finish the 12 mile road march but lost his 3X5 and had to redo the march to graduate)

Get comfortable standing underneath a helicopter

Have fun

Graduated Air Assault at Schofield Barracks (East Range) in 94.  The 12 mile road march was in the rain and mud (it sucked). I slowed down at the 3/4 mark to keep a few guys from my unit from falling out from blisters.

I always preferred dope on a rope.

And we mechanized guys use to sing in the morning.

He's a cadet, not active duty.

If he fucks up a leg he's screwed. He doens't have the benifits as a solider. No medical discharge and benifits.

I tried out for Air Assault at Ft. Hood in '89.  They had a 15 mile (if I recall correctly) road march just to get selected for the class.  I didn't finish in top 150 or so of the 11ty million who wanted to go to the school.  I swear, every son of a bitch on Ft. Hood was at that road march.  I put in for airbourne and air assault many times but was never sent to the regular classes.
