I'm looking into allowing upland bird hunting on my property next year. But hate the idea of all the plastic shells and wads all over the place. Is there anyone who makes Biodegradable shells? I've seen the federal paper shells, is that my only option? Any help would be great.

Just tell the people hunting to please pick up their shells.

Most people I know will retrieve their shells if asked to by the land owner.

Just tell them if you find more than a couple of hulls left out, you will not allow them to hunt there again next year, but if they keep the place clean, you will allow them to hunt again. Give them motivation to pick them up

I promise to pick up all of my shells, and yours too if you'll let me hunt your land!

Seriously!

You could take the old rims from plastic shells and some cardboard of about the same thickness as the plastic shells and make your own paper shells.

Remember that the paper hulls will still have a brass base... nothing's just going to disappear.

If they are irresponsible enough to not police their spent hulls,
why would you even let them hunt again?

I won't be there to enforce the rules and getting my dad to is of dubious value.

But prehaps you are right, I could try and get them to pick them up. It's just that I see a lot of people with autoloaders and would prefer not to have to worry about it. Would also be nice not to have to deal with the wads.

So no one knows of a biodegradable shell?

PS: The land is located in western MD. I live and work in Los Angeles most of the time, my dad looks after the place.

I think that would have the least environmental impact with the exception of cleaning up after yourself.

I know, but the metal base blends in after a season or so. Plow the field and you really don't notice. But that plastic in bright colors just looks like litter.

I hunt upland birds once a year for thanksgiving, on the easter shore, and our guide never asked us to pic them up (I do, but I shoot a SXS and don't have to worry about ejection).

Like I said, it's just one less thing to worry about. If such a product exists, that is.

Hell, anymore even shotgun shells are starting to be worth it to reload again.

Any time I go skeet shooting or hunting, I pick up all my shells and anyone else's who doesn't want em.

Post this in the MD forum and I am sure you can find members who would love to hunt it at the cost of policing their shells.

I hear that,

But I want something I can buy off the shelf and pass on at cost, as a condition of hunting there. Reloading my own is not an option, legally if nothing else.

?Porque?

eta: Liability issues?

eta: Make THEM get the biodegradables.  Make it a condition of the use of your land.

I certainly will when the time comes, but this is my dad's project, so I'm going to let him hammer out the details before I promote it.

you will never notice the wads.  i seldom notice the hulls, and my land prob sees a thousand shots or more per year.
