The Army was the same way while I was in. We got ACU uniforms, woodland IBA, and  DCU molle gear. To top it off I had a multicam utility pouch at 5 o'clock on my vest...

Actually, it looks like the gentleman to the right (viewer's right) of the general in the khaki jumpsuit is wearing the new ABU, and the guy next to him has ACU's.

5 different uniforms, I think...

Oh I know. I have 7 years active army infantry and a year in the ARNG. Big reason why I am back in the AF.

And those are both ABU's, just one is alot more faded out. Not ACU's. You can tell by the pockets right away they aren't ACU's.

Air Force, not Airforce.

First off, for a formation / photo a uniform should be specified.  Those Officers in flight suits, yeah, I'm willing to bet that none of them were flying that day.

Chances are, those in flight suits are visitors--look at the ranks.

Many squadrons mandate that a squadron-specific ballcap be worn with BDUs.  That looks like it is happening.

The USAF is now transitioning from BDUs to the new ABU.  That's a whole 'nother thread in and of itself.  However, with the ABUs, only the ABU-pattern patrol cap is authorized.  No squadron ballcaps are to be worn.  General Officers and Command Chief Master Sergeants were the first to be able to wear the new ABUs.  Now they are being offered for sale at the MCSS and are being issued to trainees at Lackland AFB.  Other than that, it's Airmen that want to be the first on their block to have them that are buying / wearing them.

Yes, that Colonel is as fucked-up as a football bat.  There's no explanation there.

Remember, the Army has also been through this recently:

I won't switch to the ABU until they order me to or issue them for overseas use. I prefer my BDU's. Beside I am at almost 19 years now. I will retire before the wear out date....lol.

And the Murphy series is funny as hell. I made it to the SPC one. Any new ones out?

I'm in the ANG.  They need to buy me mine.  $100+ for the fuckin' boots alone!  Of course, the t-shirts, belts and everything else are not interchangeable.  They even specify different socks!

Right now is a shitty situation for anyone in the ANG that needs new BDUs / ABUs.  The BDU supply is dwindling.  To buy one set of ABUs requires all the accessories mentioned above to be purchased, therefore no unit is going to spend that kind of money.  We have guys that have had BDU shirts on order for over a year now.

I've got 7 1/2 more years until I get a nice blue ID card.

That is at McGee Tyson ANG Base south of Knoxville.  That Minute Man statue is made out of fiberglass, not bronze.  The ANG does a lot of training there.  I went through ALS there and will probably go to NCOA there as well.  I have done many a ceremony at that exact spot.

All of us in the ANG aren't like that.

The picture is relatively recent as I know several of the instructors in the blue baseball caps.

That's what I though it was. I did ALS there in 1999. Got the Levitow Honor Grad award.

I am also ANG here in TN. The guys deploying are issued the ABU's. I still have 8 sets of BDU's still with tags on them. It will be a LONG time before I wear that abortion of a uniform.

That's pretty bad.  Why so many different uniforms?  Is that a training facility?

I know (at some schools) students will be coming from different areas of the base to make muster.  That could be a simple accountability formation.  But who knows.  It is the Air Force.

The two guys wearing ABU's are wearing the same uniform, they had a problem with them because they got them from a few different manufacturers so some match and some dont color wise. I have seen way faded ones that were brand new and then bright ones that were new also. I know packinheavy knows more about it then me but I am pretty sure they were phasing out the BDU's by 2011. The problem right now is the ABU's are heavy as hell which makes them hot so alot of people are sticking with the BDU's. I heard from a bunch of guys they are doing hot weather ones but I dont know the stage they are in.

The 3 star in the desert flight suit, why is he wearing a ball cap?  Is that standard in the AF?

All I have to say is the Marine Corps and the Air Force conduct business VERY differently.

Actually it is a surplus eight point cap we were saddled with after you guys went to digital.

They are standard issue with DCUs and even say marine corp on the inside label.  They just don't have the anchor and globe on the front.  All we can figure is that there must have been a few million of them in a warehouse some where or the AF got a hell of a deal on them.

I did AIT at Goodfellow AFB-we had Drill Sergeants and a uniform of the day, but you'd see the Air Force formations marching to class with a whole assortment of Class B in both short and long sleeve, BDUs, and fatigue jackets.

The various uniforms don't bother me.  I have always gotten a kick out of the USAF's plethora of headgear, but my understanding is that they have nixedthat with the ABU.

The fat ass female Colonel with her hands in her pockets at the POA is unexcusable though.   Even though the USAF is the most relaxed service for things like drill, that is still way outside of okay.  I bet when this picture got published she got a nice General Officer ass chewing.  The first rule of the military is "never embarrass the military" and she broke it.

As far as head gear and uniformity and stupidity goes, the US Army is the winner.

A soldier in garrison might need to wear four different hats in one day.  First at PT, if it's cold they might mandate the black watch cap or black micro fleece (but of course, not a mix, even though they look the same from a distance and it's frigging PT...).  Next ,morning formation in berets.  Then it's off to work where there's a good chance the mandated head gear is the patrol cap.  If at any time he rides in a tactical vehicle, even on base on pavement he needs a ACH or kevlar...  then he can end the day at formation, back in berets.

Attached to the Cav I've worn watch cap, patrol cap, beret, helmet and Stetson in one work day, when the unit was not in the field.  That unit mandated patrol caps as garrison work head gear with BDU/DCU and boonie caps in the field, just tofurther complicate things.

Okay I am just going to reiterate what some people have already stated...

...those 9 officers in the front are most likely visitors to that Sq. It is just a photo op. I know that I have never seen a sq. or group of Air Force personnel look quite like that.

As for the woman.. there is no excuse for that, and i am sure she looks at the picture and realizes what a dumbass moment that was for her.

I did that once!  I was the guideon bearer for my company, so I was used to saluting with my left arm across my chest.  I had just set the guideon into the vehicle and an officer walked by and I did it out of habit.  I realized what I had done, turned back around, walked up to him and apologized.  He laughed and told me had figured that - no hard feelings.  It was actually kind of funny at the time, but I still shake my head at it.
