| I was wondering since we know that a chrome lined barrel is not as accurate as a non chrome barrel, how exactly far off are they. The competition shooters say at Camp Perry, dont use Chrome lined barrels because they cant be machined to the competition levels. I know that Chrome lined barrels are better for all weather but how about non chrome lined barrels, do you need to do more cleaning and lubricating to maintain a pit free barrel? Just wondering if I should go to a Chrome lined barrel. Lined or not they will still hit their objective.------------134thSIGNAL |

A non chrome lined barrel should be fine, it is more difficult to clean but not impossible. However, a chrome lined barrel is a nice insurance policy to have. A good chrome lined barrel should shoot under 1 MOA all day long. The difference between the two is very minimal, perhaps 1/4 MOA, if even that much. |

I am a fairly good shot. I consistently fall in the upper-middle of the pack in any tactical AR match. I shoot iron sights only. I have a chrome lined barrel and I am not as accurate as the barrel. On a side note, I don't know if I'll ever break the top 10... There are too many damn good shooters in my state! |

There is a difference generally speaking. Chromed barrels tend to be less accurate than non-chromed barrels but the difference is generally only enough that competition shooters (like at Perry) will have to worry about. There are some sniper rifles (FN has one) that are chrome lined though, so it's not universal. From your forum name I gather that you're military. If your M-16 is accurate enough then chromed should be fine - all M16's and M-4's have chrome lined barrels. -K |

Chrome lined barrels are accurate. A good one WILL shoot sub M.O.A. with the right load. But a good non-chrome lined barrel will be more accurate; especially with heavy competition bullets. Really good accuracy with either barrel will probably only be apparent with handloaded ammo. I haven't run into any factory ammo that will outshoot my customized handloads in either my two chrome lined barrels or my non-chrome lined DCM barrel. If you're not going to load your own ammo, it probably doesn't matter which barrel you have. |
