Say I have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista and I was to install it onto a second computer recently formated hard drive that already had it on there once. How would I go about activating the program? Will it even ask to be re-activated? Will I run into any problems and if so, how would I solve them?

Thanks,
Kris

Is there a version of Linux that works better than Windows for a Home Theater PC? I wouldn't mind trying it if there was. Also, what about driver support? Is it there, or is it kinda a crap shoot?

It will prompt you to activate the product again.  I'm not sure how many activations you are allowed with Vista before you have to call Microsoft and get permission to activate it again.

As for what will prompt an activation, even if it is on the same computer just changing the amount of ram is enough for Microsoft to say you have to activate the product again.

Is it a commercial boxed copy of Vista or an OEM version that came with a computer or was an upgrade for a computer?

Boxed retail version may be installed on any computer and activated, or reinstalled and activated on a different computer as long as Vista is uninstalled from the previous computer it was on.

OEM copies can only be installed on the computer they were sold with or are intended for and may not be transferred to a different computer.

I've had to reactivate a couple of OEM copies of Vista because of component failure.  (hit by lightning)

I had to call Microsoft and get the code number from the nice people in India.  Actually, it was painless.

No.... there isnt anything comparable to Media Center in Vista on any Linux distribution.  But it is pretty typical for a Linux geek to ignore any real question and just shout "install linux" as a default brainless answer.

Just install it, then it will prompt you to activate it.  If if wont activate because of too many activations you have already done, you simply call Microsoft and they will first make sure your ID isnt compromised/stolen, and then walk you through the activation process.
