While trying to view a few pictures today, my screen froze, computer beeped through the on-board speaker ONE time, and then said the driver wasn't working.

It then went to a view that looks like safemode with out a restart and stayed there.

A restart brought me back to full color at 1600x1200, all temps look ok with cpu at 42c system at 25c. No way to read the vid card though, but the fan had some dust in it that I blew out, not too bad though.

Do I need to look for another vid card, or might I have some other problem lurking? Yesterday I installed some new camera software and it froze up when trying to grab the pictures and on restart nothing showed up for a bit, until I did a hard power off and restart.

3 + years ago I built this system, so I guess it might be time for something new. Any other tips/tests/etc to do/look out for?

Turn off the machine.

Pop out the video card.

Inspect the capacitors for goop leaking out the top of the capacitors.

If it is a DUAL monitor video card, you can sometimes get away with using the OTHER output for a while.

Or, more likely, rounded tops on the capacitors (they should be flat).  If they are bulging, they have cooked, and you need to see if your vid card is still under warranty.
