We got my daughter an Ipod for Christmas and she has a bunch of avi files that need to be converted to MP4 format so she can use it with her Ipod. Do you guys know of of any good freeware utilities for Win XP that can do this? Thanks! |
To get music off the ipod you will need something other than iTunes. You can try ephpod or yamipod for free but they didnt work that well for me. Anapod explorer is what I ended up buying. It works great for me, but be warned the free trial version is buggy as hell. Alternatively, can you run itunes on a flash drive or something? NM, I think I misunderstood what you are looking to do. |
more like I have Itunes at home.. my ipod is at work,, < all mp3's.. im assuming.. since i never did anything special to them .. but im learning apple is a sneaky MF., or im dumb > I would like to add more music from folders on my work machine.. with no itunes.. can that be done ? thanks., |
No. Well, you can install it to a flash drive, but you can't "take it with you". The operating system retains much of what makes the program function, and simply installing the files to a flash drive won't allow you to run it from the flash drive on a computer that doesn't have it installed. You CAN place the music files and setup files on the flash drive, and take those with you. I keep a copy of itunessetup.exe with me on a flash drive, and I keep my music on a portable hard drive. |

To convert CD's to mp3: Exact Audio Copy To convert video files (incl. .avi) to mp4: Videora Disclaimer: previous versions of this program would have the audio/video off sync by the end of a movie, but a TV show was OK. They may have fixed it; I only use it for TV shows. To pull files off an iPod: Music Rescue To rip a DVD to .avi: I'm fuzzy on this, I'm sure there's a tutorial at Videohelp.com This message has been brought to you in part by None of Those Links Are Rickrolls, Inc. |
damn... I was going to do that during Lunch ! sure it wont work ? |
Your ipod also works as a disk drive. Plug your ipod into your machine, hit cancel on all the autoplay requests/add hardware requests, and copy/paste the mp3's to the ipod in Windows Explorer. Then when you get home, move them to your computer, add to itunes library, import. NOTE: Unless you just love the auto sync of iTunes, you should be using the "manually manage files" setting. |
OK.. I get that far but i havent been able to play them.. does that mean I can not play music on my music folder at work no way no how.. untill i get to an Itunes Machine.. ? if it means that.. this Sum of a bitch is going back to the store when I get off today . thanks. |
|
Not sure what you're asking. Windows media player will play music that's currently on the computer. As for playing the iPod music on your work computer, are you forbidden from installing iTunes at work? If so, how about just plugging the computer speakers into the iPod? |

damn it.. fu¢k this !!!!!!! I paid alot of MF money for this little peice of crap.. I had to TALK MYSELF into it . get something new cluster.. go with the flow cluster.. modernize your self cluster.. I cant do itunes at work ,, comeone folks.. lunch time is coming in 2 hours for me.. help find a solution before I use up my lunch hour returning this crap < which i LIKED until this surfaced > .. co-workers are saying my viens are showing on my neck :) this is funny. |
ok.. I have a BUNCH of music on my work computer.. I want that music on my Ipod. and I want it on there now. not when I get home. I dont want to load it. THEN wait to go home to where the itunes is installed on my comp.. before MY music is loaded on MY device. thanks for any help. edit: If this was a cheap sub Benjamin<$100> product,, no big deal,, this fucker was 2 and a half bills. I will not be restricted in anyway .. |

I'm not familiar with any of the programs that can take the place of iTunes to load music to an iPod. Not being able to drag-and-drop using Windows Explorer is one of the drawbacks to an iPod, but for me the benefits (chiefly, the interface) outweigh the negatives. Can you install iTunes, load it, then uninstall iTunes? |
Thanks Doggscube, Videora seems to be doing the job! I'll also check out the other utilities you mentioned! |
damn yamipod,, erased everything on my ipod .. oh well. back to the store it goes. sorry Yojimbo for hijacking your thread. edit says I have 66 gb free < out of 80 > but it says no music . :( |
Copy the files from the iPod to the computer, or ANY computer where you want to listen to them. This applies only if you are using your iPod as a mass storage drive, or you have some 3P program that will suck iPod contents off it. I am having trouble figuring out what you are doing? Are you using an iPod to transfer music from home to work? |
I wanted to put the music I have at work on the IPOD.. and listen NOW.. not having to wait till I got home. I dont want music from my ipod to my work comp.. I wanted my music from my work computer on my ipod. I alwso didnt want to have to wait to I got around an itunes machine to be able to listen to them on the ipod.. I installed the yamipod.. I was able to drag and drop the music from my work computer onto the ipod.. when it was almost done ... it froze.. and now my ipod has no music. |
Shrug. Sorry about that. I don't understand why iTunes was off the table, but it may be worth it now to do a soft reset, and try it again. You could also attempt to use a different program. Did you copy the music to the iPod in Mass Storage mode? That may be why you have "nothing" on it. |
|
just started winamp.. didnt even realize the ipod was still connected.. just wanted to watch a movie.. and it poped up with " what type of ipod do you have " i selected .. then the music i playedable thru itunes .. but on the ipod itself.. it still says no music.. now I need to find something called a FWID to see what Floola will do for me.. now its just down to i wanna do it with out itunes,, simply cause wont let me! ![]() oh and itunes is off the table cause im at work so that a no go .. and i feel if I paid 250 for something .. I should have the option to use something other the program that came with it. |
Try Winamp somebody suggested it in an Ipod thread a couple of weeks ago and I've found it works very well for transferring files. I got my wife an Ipod Nano for Christmans and I've been using Windows Media to rip CDs to MP3 and Winamp to transfer them to the Ipod. Winamp has also tranferred the movie files (some home-movie AVIs I converted using the demo version of Avex). |
I think you and I were typing at the same time.. found it by accident. it sees and plays the music on the IPOD.. but when I disconnect.. the ipod itself still says " no music " |
i cant use itunes at work.. the not wanting to wait is just me being an ass about this.. |
Well, you do! ETA: It sounds like you have the files loaded onto the iPod as a Mass Storage device. Winamp sees the iPod as a drive. Try to look at it in Windows Explorer. If you can see all your files in there, as they exist on your work computer, the iPod won't recognize them. Copy them back to the computer then erase, or erase them if you still have them on the computer, and then reload them all through the WinAmp interface. I have never used it so I don't know the details. I am one of those weirdos that manages to be satisfied with iTunes. According to Forest, you shouldn't have an issue. |
iPods work in 2 different ways, Mass Storage Device, and Music Player. Sounds like you have the files loaded as a MSD. That is my theory. |
|
all the music was done thru itunes .. OK everyone listen up.. foola works.. it will ask for you ipod type and the FWID . < this field will be blank. > go here to find your and a how to : forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=2282274#post2282274 somehow this fixed the issue with my ipod saying no music,.. all is well now. and I have an Ipod manager I can use at work * ![]() *the link provided has a batch file that gives you your FWID to use with foola . |
Let me put it this way. I've never held an Ipod (out of the store box) until I connected it to the laptop and transferred my wife's Kenny Rogers CDs to the ipod within a few minutes of ripping them off the CD using Windows Media. If I can do it - I'm sure these younger guys can. My thanks to the ARFCom crew for helping me out over the last month - so when Christmas came the laptop was already setup with the right software tools to do the job. (oh and these Nano's are uber-cool, I had no idea, I'm going to ask the wife for one...). |
Yes they are. I just bought my wife the black 8 gig one for Christmas, and I am jealous, even though I have the 60 gig Video iPod. Hers is a little more refined, and definitely cooler looking. Coverflow is cool, the image previews on the main screen is neat, and I like the way it shows the clock when the display is at rest. |
I got my wife the 8 gig green one. Darn thing even has games and a stop watch! We'll be ripping books-on-CD all next week for an upcomming trip. |
We didn't convert any movies and probably won't as all my daughters files are basically tv show episodes. I'll let you know if we do any movies. |
|
Ok I ripped a movie, took about 25 minutes (while I was surfing ARFcom Edited to add: Well the 110minute DVD went from a 5.8GB file (ripped) to a 488MB file (Converted to MPEG). Winamp uploaded the 488MB MPEG4 movie to the iPod in less than a minute. It sounds fine and looks good (much better than I expected). So far the sound seems to be synched perfectly (5 minutes into movie). Though there does not seem to be a 'fast foward' capability (unlike the PC quicktime viewer) Edited a 2nd time: Ok 7 minutes into the move it just 'froze up'. Volume still worked, and I could return to the menu - but it restarted at the begining |
|
Another update. Using the same riped file, I reran Videora with some changes (notably using the 'old' file type). File size increase 50% (now almost 700MB), and sound is not *quite* as good (then again I didn't requirest the best quality - just medium). Movie seems to work fine now. I'm happy - it saved me $40 for a commercial encoder. (oh and I finally figured out how to fast foreward). |

found it by accident.
