Anyone have their sport pilot license yet ? What did it cost ? What kind of plane do you solo in  ?  Any annual flight time requirements ?

Anyways I have my Private, but I haven't even been in a GA craft in almost 10 years.

Is the Sport Pilot different from the Rec Pilot?

(Shows how long I've been out of it all...)

Sport pilot is only a few years old and IMHO has better restrictions than the rec pilot does.

haven't done it yet, but i've been thinking about it and have called a few local places. i've been quoted $3,500 to $4,000. however, because of the relative "newness" of the sport pilot program, there aren't nearly as many sport instructors as there are private instructors. as a result, many schools don't offer sport instruction.

in addition, i've also found a few schools in the area that offer a "package" deal on private instruction (good for up to 60 hours, which should be more than enough for the average student) for ~$6,200. given that most students need more than the minimum number of hours to be ready for the checkride, i think $4k might be a more appropriate figure for the sport license. in this case, it might be worth it to suck up the extra $2k and get the private license.

When they initially proposed the "sport pilot license" years ago, it was limited to only a few planes and the distance allowed to travel, mostly in state. It is pretty much useless.

You'd be better off with a private pilots license, if you're a fast learner, the minimum 40 hours should be enough, make sure you have a flight instructor that isn't afraid to sign you off for solo flights after 30 hours, etc.

Good for you man ....

The 30 hours was based on the 40 hour minimum.... being you don't want to go over the 40 due to overall cost unless you want to pay for extra.

Yep, you can solo at anytime.... but I've seen folks who's been over the 40 hour min. going 50+ hours on dual instruction.

So, at maximum 30 hours and you need your instructor to sign you off for solo .... etc.

Sport pilot was designed to legitimize the guys out there whoa re flying illegal Ultralights. Most ultralights out there do not meet FAR's because they are too heavy, too fast, carry too much fuel or have a passenger's seat. The new class is kind of an amnesty for them.
