So I ordered my first upper during the armalite Christmas sale and remember someone saying something about having to buy an different front site b/c of the lower rails or something. I really dont know much about AR's  yet so could someone explain what this means and if I really have to get a different front site to be able to shoot accurately and if so which one?

did you get a 5.56mm or .308?

If its 5.56 and 16" carbine, I'd guess you are talking about the "F" marked front sight base.  Armalite uses the standard front sight base not the "F".   So you may need to get a taller front sight post.  Shoot it first before replacing anything.

Its 5.56. Yeah thats what I remember them saying. How can you tell if it is F marked or is it 100% certain that Armalite does not use them. So it may not be a big deal? good

Sounds like you need a front sight made to mount on the gas block instead of a railed fore-arm!

Look around here and you can see the difference

Maybe not depending on how well (or not) you shoot.

ETA: Do you have an elevation adjustable rear sight?

So why would they put something on a new item that is not the correct size?
