i have a 2000 dodge dakota sport, 4.9l, gas guzzlin mammy rammer, when i apply my brakes the power steering seems to turn off completely, is it tied into the booster for the brakes or something along those lines, i checked levels and all is good, the snow drifts might have broke something, but i have no leaks....any help is appreciated

Fluid may be very low and shifting causing the pump to loose pressure when you stop.  Your pump may be bad or something else in the system is leaking.

Power steering is not tied into you brake system.

P.S. I'm only a shade tree mechanic not a professional.

On some Cars and Trucks the power steering system and the brake booster IS run by a common pump. The brake booster is a hydro boost. look at the lines comming off the pump and follow  them. if they go to the brake booster and the steering box then it is of that type,Also the hydro boost brake booster is smaller than the old round type of vaccum boosters. with out putting a pressure gauge and flow meter on it its hard to tell but it sounds like a faulty brake booster bleeding too much of the flow from the pump. I am not an automobile mechanic but I am a ASE certified Master truck mechanic. I also work on cars too for myself and a few others. Hope this helps.

2K Dakota has your typical PS pump and Rack and Pinion Steering. Not tied into the brake system in any way, typical run off the serpentine belt setup.. I'd check your fluid level before I go any further, do you ever get squeal when you turn the wheels at a stop?

4.7V8 or a 3.9 V6? No 4.9 I know of except in a Ford. [300 CID]

mehhh...i meant 4.7l, sorry. Well i checked the fluids to begin with and they are up, i smell evidence of varnish though, the problem seems to be decreasing, i'm thinking maybe i had some ice somewhere in the steering causing strain, the serpentine is fine, no cracks, squealing or walking, the belt is relatively new, i replaced it when i changed my AC compressor last year. Thanks for all the help so far...
