You guys use any kind of software to prevent smutty website access?

This is a real headache for parents.

If your kid types "Cinderella" into google, up pops a bunch of websites of gay bondage, women getting 3 inputs, etc., etc.

Actually, if you type almost anything into google, like "corn flakes" or "sump pump" into google, up pops a bunch of websites of gay bondage, women getting 3 inputs, etc., etc.

Is there some way to make the internet kid friendly?

Thanks

www.netnanny.com

I use it and you can configure it to allow or refuse sites based on content.

Also go to advanced settings under Google and turn the filter up to strict.  Should solve most of the problem that you mention in your original post.

That and stop adding "gay bondage" to your query.

I sense you have an unhealthy interest in gay bondage and women getting 3 input

No.

You just have to take the time to track what they do.  You know, actually watch them.

We pulled the boys' computer out of their room and moved it into the living room.

Good for you for wanting to control what they see, but you pretty much have to do it yourself.  Any software can be bypassed.

American Revolution:

Set up by years of high taxation and a government unresponsive to the people and finally triggered by a decree to disarm the people.

End result: we won the war - and then about 150 years later we had high taxation, a government unresponsive to the people and laws being passed to disarm the people.

Hmm....

Any other "option" is just a feel-good waste of money. Kids are clever, and the internet is a horrible place. If you don't want them to see bad stuff, then don't let them on it at all.

Hmm...  googled twice unflitered....  no ghey, no porn....

You have a PC virus or you should delete your 'cookies' to prevent it from going back to the sites you already visited.

I'm not trying to attack the clever kid angle, I just don't want porn popping up at random when my grade schooler is looking at some disney website.

I just googled disney, porn on the 3rd page.   What a bunch of perverts out there.

One of my co-workers uses Astaro Linux for an inline content filter. They sell a commercial product but offer a 5-seat free license for home use in situations like yours.

This is ideal if you have a high speed connection and a gateway with multiple computers behind it. It updates the black list automagically and lets you set a lot of other filtering criteria. All you need is the software (which you can download) and an old computer to install on it (with two network cards). This is "real" content filtering, not a half assed version.

ETA: check out the Live Demo's.
