I usually wear muffs or the foamy plugs at the range.  The foamy plugs that I wear have a noice reduction rating of 32.  I thought a pair of the Silencio plugs with the baffels in them would be good for hunting.  I could still hear my surroundings and visit with other hunters but the baffel would protect my ears from gun blast.  The Silencio plugs just have a NNR of 7.  It says on the package that the NNR ratings are based on continuous noise levels and are not an accurate measure of impulse sound protection, such as gunfire.

Are the Silencios worth wearing or should I just wear the foamys and not be able to hear what the other pheasant hunters in my group are saying.

You can purchase electronic ear muffs for little money these days.  If you've never tried them, please do.  You will be quite impressed.  Otherwise, I would skip using plugs while hunting.

If I don't have electronic muffs, I use the foam plugs and regular ear muffs over them while plinking at the range.

I use and like electronic muffs for range use (sometimes along with plugs) but have got to think they would be not so great for bird hunting . I could see myself knocking the right hand headset off my ear whenever I mounted my gun

I've only hunted once, pheasant, using a 26in O/U.  No ear plugs.

We probably fired 30-40rnds that entre day.

No ringing (in this situation anyway)

Those are the ones issued to Marines these days.  You can wear them all day minor discomfort.  It does takes a while to get use to them in your ears, this problem exists with all in the ear plugs out there not just these ones.  It is just not natural for most people to have things in their ears for extended periods.

They block enough of loud noise that you will not have ringing after an IED goes off close by or you are shooting a 240 or M2.  However, I have been told by audiologists that in the combat mode, the provide the minimum of protection and that more protection is preferred.

I tried a pair of the Silencio plugs many years ago and found them better than nothing.  They allowed one to hear, but the protection was inadequate.  There are much better options out there, but usually more expensive.  So how much is one's hearing worth?

I've used these extensively for both practical pistol and practical rifle type training and competition. IMHO they work quite well for that. If you are doing a lot of rifle work it is preferable to having your muffs pushed off your ear all the time. YMMV, they may not be quiet enough for you. Not sure how good they would be for hunting. If you've never worn that style of plug before you may find them uncomfortable compared to the foam ones.

I usually remove the entire olive side of the plug since I never use it. I just leave the yellow piece and the valve assembled to it.
