I am looking for a vise to go under a vertical mill.

Are there particular brands that are known for their quality, good reputation?

Really, the best question is:

Are there any brands I need to avoid?

Kurt if you can afford it.  I have a Chinese clone that works pretty well, but it took a lot of adjusting and tweaking to get it working right.

Another vote for Kurt.

Where would I go to find the best deal on a Kurt vise?

MSC, Traver's Tool Company, J&L Industrial Supply are some you might check out. Traver's is usually a little bit better on prices that J&L. You might also take a look at McMaster-Carr.

Kurt if you have the budget for it.

Knockoff one will still work.

Is this for home use?

Kurt, of course if you can afford it.

I have a Taiwanese clone that works great.  I put the money I saved over having "the best" to a "pretty good" into tooling.

A 6" Kurt costs how much?  That is not an easy recommendation to make for a hobby machinist.

Yes.

Just getting started but the general mantra I'm hearing is to get "Bigger and better than you thought you would need."

I think over 400.00.  Unless you are an old and picky tool and die maker i would save the money,

I have  used Jet mill/drill w/ r-8.

I called Victor Machinery in NYC and asked what they had that was good for the money.

They sent me a pretty nice vice that was made in Japan. I like it just fine.

I also have a Chinese tilting vice that works good and is usually the one that stays on the machine for normal use. I have to use an indicator to line it up because the alignment lugs are not quite good enough.

Then I would have to recommend a clone vise and use the dollars saved to buy a better grade indicator.

If I am spending YOUR money?

Kurt.

Spending the bosses money? Kurt or Starrett (if they even make a vice).

My money? The other quality options listed above.
