These scans are from an issue of "Mechanix Illustrated". I believe it is from October of either 1941 or 1942. Interesting and rare photos of the never used "Paramarine" unit. Note the weapons, uniforms and equipment.

Kinds sorta. The 1st Parachute landed on Gavutu, just north of Guadalcanal on 7 August. There was a Japanese seaplane base and some other crap there. Navy blew up the seaplane ramp they were supposed to land at so the Navy drove their craft sideways to the Jap MG's to land at the island's dock. So they took casualties in the boats, and then when they landed. My great uncle was a Platoon Sgt in the 1st Parachute and was there. He was mortally wounded dragging two wounded Marines to cover and they gave him the silver star. Thanks for the pics. I'm going to save them and send them to my grandfather to see if he can see if Tommy is in any of them. |
