Who here builds 'em?  What companies should I look for?  Right now I'm building the Constructo Flyer model(my first tallship model).  Any suggestions for my next project?

It's really nice but the instructions are god aweful(10 or so pictures with one side of one page of directions).  For the most part its just figuring it out on your own from the pictures.  Are most of them like that?

If you buy a model that doesn't have any sails, just the rigging, how hard is it to add sails/is that usually an option?

Also i've you've got 'em, post pics!

I'm building one almost identical to yours.  Instructions are terrible here also.  I've been working on it since I got married in 1999

I got mine for christmas in 2000.  I worked on it off and on for a year before putting it away.  I pulled it out again and I'm not putting it away till it's done or I smash it in a fit of rage.

I've really wanted to put some models together, but I don't feel I have the attention to detail to put them together and make them look really good.

Towely, are you going to make it to the HTF dinner or what?

You can get cheap shitty models for about 14.99 that are very basic.  Try one out and go from there.  I don't really have the time for models but I usually have 2-3 projects going that I will do a step or two every couple days on.

I'm gonna try but thats a hell of a drive for me.  I've got some friends in that area and I'm gonna try to coordinate a hunting trip with them on Sunday so I wouldn't have to drive all the way back home in the same day.  That and it's a great excuse for an extra day of hunting.

I've bought four of these things and have not finished one yet (about 10) years. The instructions with all of them are terrible. I think it is because all these model makers are foreign and don't really market for the U.S.

Here's a good web site with a lot of different model companies.

Well Constructo sends the same instruction booklet no matter where they sell it.  The book I got has about 10-12 different languages in it.

One of mine is a Constructo. I do just like you said. I use the instructions as a reference and the build my way.

I have spent endless hours on the web trying to find advice from guys that build these monsters but it seems they build most of their stuff from scratch using historical documents.

I think I am going to try one of these.

or one of theses:

But it would probably be better taking a stab at one of these:

You know, as far as models go those can end up looking damn good on a wall somewhere if you build them right.  And they aren't just a piece of cake either..  My cousin built one once and it looked fairly challenging for a beginner.

Not nearly as challenging as an entry level regular model but enough to get you familiar with some of the steps(though I would advise just going to the entry level if you have ever worked on any models at all).

I'm afraid that has sailed clear over my head.

I think he lost his mind on the last episode of BSG and crushed his to fuck-all.

Uh-oh. Maybe I shouldn't have linked to their photos. Let me fix that.

I decided to get this instead. Hopefully I will get further along then all the other ones.

I love tall ship models.
I started one several years ago, a plastic model not wood.
When I had to move Allied Moving Company totally ruined my project.

I don't think this one is salvageable, I'm going to start another one.

You could tear up the sails and splinter the rigging a bit and make it look like someone went apeshit on it with bar or chain shot.

edit: nvm it's all plastic.  I suppose you still could be that might be a bit difficult.
