Too bad the charger missed the gas pumps, you can see it in the background as the pumps explode.

Yeah, the Charger apparently had extra hubcaps.

There's also a sloppy edit when the Charger slides into a car while making a turn.........

I like seeing the other cars on the street, some nice classics to be.

It's one thing to see this on TV or computer.

But you should have seen that scene in a movie theatre.  A completely different experience!  People got carsick!

They were supposed to have about a dozen Chargers to use in that film.  The crews were busy replacing engine mountings and parts after every shot.  It's still my favorite car chase scene.

No.

There were only two Chargers and two Mustangs used for the movie. Both Chargers were destroyed (one blown up and one cut up) and one of the Mustangs was parted out after the movie. A Warner Brothers employee bought the other Mustang. Its current whereabouts are unknown. Steve McQueen tried to buy it at some point, but never did.

The cars were not stock street cars. They were carefully prepared stunt cars from Max Balchowsky's outfit.

Also, the awesome wheel-hopping reverse burnout by McQueen was not scripted. He blew the turn, ended up in the ditch and backed it out. The footage of the screw-up and recovery was kept in the film.

No kidding.  I saw it as a kid, and on a large screen it really could give you that car sick feeling.
