Like a lot of of us I am interested in a nice set of web gear. I have seen the Hippo Pac at Tapco but it has no suspenders and limited storing. The alice pack is an older design with more for the long term than ammo, parka, food storage. Is there any web sites that sells a nice SA pack or similar for a reasonable price?

Reverse your thinking.  Ready?  Ok. Don't pack what you MIGHT need, Pack what you'll need FOR SURE.  Pre-position the other stuff.  You cannot carry all the stuff you might need and still be effective as an individual, or as a member of a team.  No army does that, and neither should you.  Think, and plan ahead.

I went to an Army/Navy Surplus store and slowly built my LBE.  Started with a Belt, Suspenders,  buttpack, and 2 Mag pouches.  Then 2 1 quart canteens, with the covers, then a few smaller compass/first-aid pouches.  All in all I spent just over a hundred but I only spent 20-30 dollars at a time.  I may go with a BlackHawk Omega vest, to wear at the range, under my coat, just so I don't have all my mags falling off the table, but for now, I'm happy with this.

Hang on for a sec.  Only YOU can define your exact needs.  The SA hippo pack is a heavy canvas butt pack designed to work with a set of suspenders, etc.  NOT the best choice IMHO.
Define the mission, satisfy YOUR requirements to fulfill the mission, FIRST.
You may well find that one fixed set of LBE is not sufficiently adaptible for your needs.
Guess what I'm saying is -- don't box yourself in, stay loose, and don't get hung up on any given system.
