recommend me a printer for my computer

Condition 1:  MUST NOT BE HP reasoning
Condition 2: must not rape me for cartridges that fucking don't work after 5 minutes of not being used.

Reality check:  ALL Inkjet printers are sold as loss leaders (read: the manufacturers lose money on every printer) to get you to buy the ink.  All the money is made on the ink, and all of the newer models have chips on the cartridges that effectively prevent you from refilling and reusing the cartridges.

Solution?  If you don't need color, buy a used HP office-quality laser printer (HP 4000 or newer).  A $70 aftermarket high-capacity toner cartridge will print 7-10,000 pages, will print them faster, and the "ink" is waterproof.

If you need color, you're screwed; you're gonna pay a lot for ink or color toner.

Do not buy an ink-jet printer.

Buy a black & white laser office printer. Those manufactured by Brother and Samsung are just fine.

And when you buy it, buy an extra toner cartridge at the same time (The first one usually doesn't last long)

If you need to print photographs, take your digital pictures to a printing company, they'll do a much better job than a home ink-jet and you won't have to kick yourself.

If you need colours for your documents, get a laser colour printer. They're a bit expensive, but you'll want to stay away from ink-jet.

Bottom line: ink-jet is evil.

I would agree with the Samsung - I have an ML-2010 laser printer that has been bulletproof.  Laser cartridges are not cheap, but they last!!!!.  Try to get 2000 to 2500 prints out of an inkjet for $85.00 in cartridges. The cost of the printer is around $125 including the full cartridge.

I would not have another Lexmark due to software problems.

I agree with recommendations for HP laser printers.

But there's no chance in hell I would pay for their inkjet ones.  I used to deal with their idiosyncratic bullshit at my old job.  The "I'm going to do a print test every time you turn it on and hopefully it doesn't misfeed the paper and chew it up or jam" sequence got tiresome.  And to think that these marvels of mass production (and non-existent quality) were leased to customers.

When the leases ended, I can't help but think that the printers that were returned in a damaged state because of... customer dissatisfaction.

yeah, you guys are right.. ink-jet is teh sUxoR

we don't have problems with the lasers at work, but we do with the hp's that take ink cartridges.

my favorite is our Ricoh 3228c

we have a brother br6050 that is rock solid..puts out excellent b&w prints down to the very end of life on the cartride (months after a warning message that's it's time to replace it)
