I have Vista Basic. (I know, I know.)

When I restart the computer, windows explorer doesn't start up, so I have no desktop. All it shows is the "Documents" window, for some reason.

So, I Ctrl/Alt/Del and start up "Task Manager", and then go to File/Run New Task/explorer.exe and then the desktop boots up.

What is causing this? It happened not too long after I got the laptop. When I called Dell to complain, the Indian dude told me that I would have to reinstall Windows because my installation was corrupted.

Is there an easier way to fix this? I'd really rather not go through the ass-pain of backing my HD up and reinstalling all my software.

ETA: NO, "Get XP" is NOT a solution. I got Vista because I expected it was going to be the new standard. This was back in March, so the whole "Vista Sucks" revelation hadn't begun yet. It works fine for me, and I haven't really had any problems. I rarely reboot my computer, but when I do, the missing desktop deal is a pain in the ass.

The Indian dude is probably correct.

Your install is probably screwed and it would be simpler to nuke it from orbit and reinstall HOWEVER, check the hard disk for issue's before the reinstall (use the manufacturers disk check utility) as I've seen disks going bad have this behavior.

What appears to be a Windows problem is actually a HD issue (like bad sectors or a head strike) that causes the OS to lose something it needs to run correctly.

Good luck.

Instead of contacting the computer company have you tried email tech support at Microsoft.  I had a issue where I couldn't get the Command prompt to show up.  Gateway said to reinstall XP but I contacted MS and it was a simple command edit that fixed the issue.

Sorry I can't help, my laptop that runs Vista refuses to shut down so its in a box waiting for a day out on the range.

Try restarting in Safe mode and report back what you get.

+1 check with MS before doing anything. apu in new delhi has zero concern or liability for your data.

vista does NOT suck. it's actually pretty slick IF your an educated pc user. it' still bleeding edge and still has a few issues but they are becoming fewer every day.
