What are the laws for selling a gun to a friend. I'm not a dealer or anything, but my friend wants to buy a gun from me and I don't know if I have to do anything special (paperwork)? He says I just have to give it to him without paperwork because I am not a dealer.

That should be correct, but it could depend on your state.  You might wanna post in the Legal section.

What state are you in? Most states say recipient must be 18, not a felon, and a resident of the state. A few are different, though.

In NC you have to get a pistol permit if selling a pistol, even from private parties. Rifle and shotgun you just sell.

I'm from Texas. The recipient is over 18. He's not a criminal or anything, but if the cops came to my door and said "That gun was registered under your name and it was just used in a homicide, your under arrest." could I just say I sold it to him? No paperwork at all?

It just whenever I buy a gun the owner registers it to me and does a background check. I thought there would be more work. The guy is a great friend of mine, and he is no criminal so I guess there is no trouble. Thanks for the advice.

That's not really accurate - there is no registration in Texas. The Form 4473 you fill out is a record of the transaction for the dealer to keep on file as long as he is in business.
