Are there really oil reserves in the Everglades?

If so, then I agree with Fred...let's pump that shit out. I have less interest in the well being of Alligators than I in the well being of Caribou, and I don't have much interest in the well being of Caribou when it comes into conflict with national security.

If there is oil there, we should save it for a "rainy day".

If there is oil there, we should pump it dry while charging a special excise tax on it that would go ONLY towards research into advanced battery and nuclear fusion technology.

Insane.

Plenty of money is going into battery research; no gov handouts are needed.

More would go into fusion if investors could understand it. Sadly, the gov has already sunk way too much money into the kinds of fusion which will never be economically feasible, so investors say, "fusion will never work".

The clouds are on the horizon, and they are very dark.

Exploiting non-renawble resources while ignoring renewable resources is stupid.
It will run out, eventually. Why not get the leg up now, while we can?

We have industries that depend on energy, but not on oil. Our biggest ideological rivals (except for China) don't.

Why should we drill for something for a very short term gain?
