I haven't played shooters online since Rainbow Six and a little of Americas Army.

After visiting a friend and seeing Counter Strike: Source, I decided I'd go buy it. Looks bad ass....have yet to play it personally.

I have a few questions.........

1) How does one find servers and are they free?

2) I haven't played any of it yet, but it looks exclusively like an online game. How does one learn the ropes prior to joining an online game?

3) Other games have mods out the ying yang. Will it be difficult to find games online where my stock version of the game is all I need?

4) I know the purists like using a keyboard to run their games. I always felt a controller is a lot easier. If keyboards were better, why don't people play XBOX 360 with wireless keyboards? Regardless, the lil fella at Circuit City felt that the range of commands in CS were more than the available buttons on most controllers. Thoughts?

5) Should I expect to get mopped for a while before I start laying waste to everyone I see...or are there servers for noobs as well?

6) What do I need to know to maximum my fun? Tips?

Any additional suggestions or thoughts are welcomed...thanks.

Its completely online, unless you want to play against bots.

Its setup for a keyboard and mouse.

You are going to get raped for a bit, especially when someone does the stupid bunny hopping thing and headshots you from across the board.

Don't even attempt any real world room clearing tactics as you can on R6.  None of that applies in the CS world.

Once you get the game, its free.  Just some of the servers are password protected.

It is old but still cool.

If you have :source you will have 2 or 3 single player games that play with bots so you can polish up before going online

never tried it with a controller/ mouse and keyboard all the way for me

don't believe it would be possible to use controlleer exclusively

haxxor-shite ruins some servers

you will die many times online before mastering this game

it has been around so long that there are folks who can play it with no more thought than breathing.

I started playing it when it was a free download mod for HL.

have fun

Theyre free, use steam to find them

2) I haven't played any of it yet, but it looks exclusively like an online game. How does one learn the ropes prior to joining an online game?

You learn by playing.

3) Other games have mods out the ying yang. Will it be difficult to find games online where my stock version of the game is all I need?

It's getting harder, but shouldnt be too bad.

4) I know the purists like using a keyboard to run their games. I always felt a controller is a lot easier. If keyboards were better, why don't people play XBOX 360 with wireless keyboards? Up to you.

5) Should I expect to get mopped for a while before I start laying waste to everyone I see...or are there servers for noobs as well?

Until you get the hang of it, you will get owned.

6) What do I need to know to maximum my fun? Tips?

Just play the damn game.

I have a few questions.........

1) How does one find servers and are they free? FREE, and abundant.  You just log into STEAM and select the game you want and the server list pops up.

2) I haven't played any of it yet, but it looks exclusively like an online game. How does one learn the ropes prior to joining an online game?  There are bots you can play against off line to get up to speed, though no real single player.  Trust me, if you have never played a fast paced shooter like CS:S, your are going to be bottom of the barrel for a while.

3) Other games have mods out the ying yang. Will it be difficult to find games online where my stock version of the game is all I need?  No, I think most if not all mods are server side.

Thoughts?  You will be raped while still in spawn buying weapons vs. someone with a keyboard and buying scripts.  You also need the speed and accuracy a mouse provides.

5) Should I expect to get mopped for a while before I start laying waste to everyone I see...or are there servers for noobs as well?  There are n00b servers but pros like to come in and rape people for fun.  Going from RS to CS:S and playing against a 75% player will be like getting struck by lightning.  You wont know WTF happened.

6) What do I need to know to maximum my fun? Tips?  Make sure you have the equipment to have fun, nothing sucks more than lag and low FPS.  You seem to already know, but you could be in for a rough ride till you get up to speed, shit can happen real fast.  Just keep at it and you will own n00bs and the occasional pro too.

Any additional suggestions or thoughts are welcomed...thanks.

Look for some videos of CAL and other pro league players.  If you didn't know better you would say they cheat.  They certainly aren't the norm and get kicked off servers a lot too because they ruin everyones fun.  Just think, one day you could be so bad ass that people think you cheat.

good point

don't assume just because somebody you never see is "headshoting" you before you can move, that they are haxxors

there are folks who have been playing so long that they are simply unbelievably good at the game

+1000 on this advice.  Play against bots offline to get practice & up to par...  Though bots don't often play like REAL people.  Some real people CAMP, go rogue, and are a little tougher...  Sometimes they're a lot dumber/easier.  Sometimes you'll wipe out 12 year olds left & right, other times you'll get Pwned by an 8 year old girl and hear her giggle over the internet.

I got really good at it...  But then I got a life.

Play the project reality mod for Bf2. I find this to be the best shooter out there....

No crosshairs  -   effective weopons (i.e u dont need to unload a whole mag to get a kill)

Its a hard game, but i cant play any other shooter.

PR is good, but there isnt enough people on the servers.

Other recommendations are Americas Army Special Forces (free, but steep learning curve), and Battlefield 2 +special forces expansion. Both are great games.

Steam, most of them are free

2) I haven't played any of it yet, but it looks exclusively like an online game. How does one learn the ropes prior to joining an online game?

Most people get it with HL2...so I guess playing HL2 will situate you with the controls.

3) Other games have mods out the ying yang. Will it be difficult to find games online where my stock version of the game is all I need?

No, but you'll probably have to download server specific stuff if you're a noob - mp3s, maps, etc. It may take longer to load the levels at first because of this.

Thoughts?

Because wireless keyboards are laggy. Point and Click is so much more precise than using an analog joystick. It will become second nature to you after awhile and you will come to loathe the controller
5) Should I expect to get mopped for a while before I start laying waste to everyone I see...or are there servers for noobs as well?

Yes, you will get pwned. BUT, there are usually enough players that you'll be able to kill at least SOMEBODY.
6) What do I need to know to maximum my fun? Tips?

Don't join servers that have over 100 ping; lag will ruin the game. Go for servers that are VAC certified - they ban hackers from the game so you usually won't find them in VAC servers.

Any additional suggestions or thoughts are welcomed...thanks.
Play Half Life 2 (HL2). It goes with CS:S (think of it as the 'single player mode')

Ok...just played for a bit to see what the deal is.

Two questions:

1) Why do some guys start the game with better weapons than others? I think my default weapon is a USP...while other guys start with M4's and such.

2) I can't seem to locate any "bot" mode or single player mode to practice without joining a live server. Anyone know where I find this?

ETA: I got smoked big time, but I did kill a few guys as well. Not bad.

If you try to play this game with a controller you wont ever do very well, and will probably end up hating it.

A controller does not give you the control that a mouse does.  In CS, headshots are super important.  It basically boils down to who can move the mouse to the correct pixel fast enough.

Yes, i said pixel.

I still can't figure out how to win a knife fight on that game. I'm constantly getting owned by 9 year olds in knife fights. I'm swinging like crazy and hit them multiple times and the kid stabs me once and I go down. What gives?

You don't, really. Make sure you have the controls configured to your liking and perhaps create a server of your own to get a feel for the game. You don't sound like your ready to set up your own bot server yet, so I won't suggest that.

3) Other games have mods out the ying yang. Will it be difficult to find games online where my stock version of the game is all I need?

...Uh, no. There's only a few thousand CS servers.

1.) No gamepad.
2.) Microsoft doesn't offer a keyboard with the 360. If they did, I'd be the first to throw my wireless controllers into a fire and piss on them for it.

5) Should I expect to get mopped for a while before I start laying waste to everyone I see...or are there servers for noobs as well?

Go to configuration, go to keyboard, and look at the keyboard functions. Find "drop weapon" and make it whatever key you want. So, if you want, say "G" to drop your weapon, just do that.

Hey,

I decided not to play after I watched this video:

There are too many people who have hundreds, if not thousands of hours playing CS.

Kevin "They scare me."

ETA: Found the full length movie:

It's the headshots through the walls that frighten me.

I got too good at that game so I haven't played it for about 4 months now...(for many reasons)

One of my favorites is to try making things more 'sporting' for me by taking the Steyr Scout and Glock 9mm and go for headshots only...  Or sometimes just a knife, handgun, and flashbangs/grenades...

If I'm going All-Out I'm a big fan of the M-4 and 50 D.Eagle...  I just wish they'd make a M1911A1 handgun for the game!!!!

Stealth/silence is the key to winning many matches.

Also...  There's just something funny about a 12Ga blasting you in the back of the head by a little 12 year old girl and hearing her giggle over her voice connection as you watch her 'terrorist' ass run away...
