"Clean up on isle four!   uh...& bring a spatula"

from wikipedia:

"Dan Osman (February 11, 1963–November 23, 1998)

He died on November 23, 1998 at the age of 35 after his rope failed while performing a "controlled" free-fall jump from the Leaning Tower rock formation in Yosemite National Park. The failure was investigated by the National Park Service with assistance from Chris Harmston, Quality Assurance Manager at Black Diamond Equipment. A change in jump site angle probably caused the ropes to cross and entangle, leading to the rope cut by melting.[2]"

Not completely accurate.....

He was doing some crazier shit called “controlled free fall”.  Basically you tie in and then jump off the cliff swinging like a pendulum.  Sounds like fun, but not exactly safe.  His record for this was 1200 feet or vertical drop.  Kinda like a much bigger version of that ride at King’s Dominion.  Anywho, two of the lines got twisted, and the friction between the ropes actually melted one of them cutting it.  Splat.

I wouldn't exactly call what he was doing "rappelling"...check out this vid at about 2:45 on, it was "controlled free-falling."

Well I would say very impressive. This would be a great skill to have under your belt. Obviously this fella does or did this hours each day like a profession. His skill was polished with lots of practice im sure.

It reminds me of these building jumpers. Has anyone ever seen this? I was thinking to learn to do this would be a great skill. Im sure the skill is well earned with lots of broken bones and other accidents. Im too old, but it does reminds me of my dreams. I can do this in my dreams and they do it real world.

I wish they had a video of the times they didnt make it.
If I could do that I would run from the police constantly...not that I ever really need to.

Back when Osman died, Climbing magazine reported that he was on his cell phone with someone when he made the jump that killed him.  Can't remember if it was his wife or a friend, but DAMN.

The man knew what he liked and lived his life doing what he wanted.
He died on his own terms.
I've got to admire that.

He must not have had his Code Red Mountain Dew on the one jump that killed him...sorry, just not very sympathetic to people who die doing all this extreme shit. Kinda funny actually. But yes he had the balls of a brass monkey.

Everybody thought he was crazy. I want to say it was Dean Potter that he called when he was making the jump, and then the phone went dead? Might not have been Potter.  Potter is a free-climber, base jumper, and slack line walker, But IIRC, he tried Osman's falling thing once and said "F THAT!"
