I went hunting up at our family ranch saturday. While out in the feild, I heard our neighbor lady yelling for help. So I went over to find that her 60 year old husband had a heart attack. Luckly I had my cell phone and she used it to call 911 while I started cpr(4th time I have had to use my training in 20 years). I worked for 10 minutes till ems showed up. EMS took over cpr and used an AED. However the HA was just too massive, he was doa to the hospital. Just one bad weekend. I fell real bad for the family Take CPR training, you never know when or where you will need it. |

Heh last weekend was fun.....we were at the lake and we and a bunch of other people were camping around this little beach area. Well a tube got loose and the owner of it started swimming after it and he got about 100yds from shore and just couldnt reach it. So we didnt really think anything of it until he started screaming "Help help!" Me and my cousins were in the water probably 20yds from shore as it was less than up to our chests just swimming around when it happened and I was closest to him and a very good swimmer so I swam out to him while my uncle got his boat. I reached him and he was completely dead tired, he couldnt even help me help him to the boat, I had to drag him myself. And then he couldnt climb up into the boat on the ladder, he had to sit there for 2mins to regain some strength. If I hadnt gotten to him and another 30secs-1min had elapsed, I have no doubt in my mind he would have drowned. ![]() Then I got a meager thanks from him (I know, I know, I shouldnt expect a thanks but when you save someones life ya know..) and then when I got back to shore my mom and aunt scolded me for going out there without any kind of floatation device(it slowed me down from swimming and all I had was a foam seat pad that I threw to my cousins at the time) and that he could have pulled me under with him had there not been any help coming. I was like, WTF?! I just saved his life and now I'm getting scolded?? |
How you feel inside and about yourself after that, and deservedly so, should make their comments roll right off. Just smile and think that another human now lives on because of you, likely with a family to still share time with him. Wow!! |

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't CPR have a very poor success rate, even if done correctly? I'm not saying not to get training, but the few people I've talked to who've done it have never had luck rescuccitating a person, and I've read the rate is under 15%. I think Hollywood really overblows how often it actually works. |
Your Right, I dont remember the actual number, but it has gone up since they introduced the SHARE (?) program, but still only like 16% (thats the highest in the EAST VALLEY PHOENIX area- Glendale I believe) The most important part is keep the blood flowing while flowing while waiting for the AED. Idea is that the human body has around four minute worth of oxygen in the body. Most people don't wanna do mouth to mouth (Deal Breaker), so just keep compressions going until the AED arrives. And yes the AED is the KEY. If the heart has stopped and the AED isn't used in time (9-12 minutes.....can't remember) then GONE. Fellow EMT OUT |
It's better than sitting there with your thumb up your ass...no? ETA: I'm not trying to come off as an asshole. |
Yep |
mouth to mouth doesn't help, and, of course, carries the risk of disease transmission. Chest compressions alone seem to do as much good as CPR is going to do. |
I was trained in cpr from my time as a company ert member. I had and keep in my truck a 'cpr' kit/FIRST AID kit . The kit has a mask for performing cpr mouth to mouth(first time I had to use it). Unfortunately the factors that worked against a resusitation was the distance(8 to 10 miles) from the closest volunteer ems/fireman(who had an aed). Also the scope of the attack. I was there in about 5 minutes(2 feilds and 2 bobwire fences) getting there. Never moved so fast in my life. Total time till better qualified people getting there was 15 to 20 minutes. Cost of AED's run in the 1500 to 6000 dollar range depending on featchers wanted. Cheapest can deliver up to 10 shocks. I have used a 3000 dollar model and it is easy. I just wish the manufacter's could get the price down to the 500 dollar mark. I'll wait a couple days before I pay my respects. |
